What happened here?

I’ve had this “survival kit” as it’s called in my car for quite a while. It was a clearance item and small enough to fit in my glove box. While I may never need to cut a tree with a mini hand saw or go fishing with a line and hook… it did include some useful items-

Waterproof matches
Fire starter
Tealight candles
Whistle
Signal mirror
Flashlight
Wire
Sewing kit
Ziploc bag
Pop up towels

And a Swiss army style knife!

Well, today I decided to inspect the kit, as I’ve mentioned with my first aid/trauma kits, it’s important to inspect your gear and replace as necessary.

What did I find?
The candles had fully melted and gotten all over everything. Nothing was really ruined, but in a situation where I would have needed any of these items, I would have been in some trouble. It took a substantial time to de-wax everything and ensure everything was still usable. Bottom line, it got hot enough to melt wax in my car.

Make sure your gear is usable and hasn’t been damaged by environmental factors or wear and tear.

When my daughter’s friend broke her arm at a play place, the staff didn’t even have a basic first aid kit. Fortunately, I had my Large IFAK in the car—with everything we needed. With the help of another parent (a doctor), we were able to splint and stabilize her before EMS arrived.

Real emergencies happen. Be ready.

Check out the full story on the Post section of our website and a breakdown of some other need to have items I keep handy on the go.
