💭 While the fitness industry is home to countless influencers who genuinely inspire and uplift their followers, it's important to acknowledge that there are some who employ shame as a tactic to motivate their audience. Let's delve into how fitness influencers use shame and explore why it can be harmful.
-
1️⃣ Body shaming: Some influencers shame individuals for their current body shape or size, making them feel inadequate and unworthy. This approach creates a negative body image and can lead to low self-esteem, body dysmorphia, and even disordered eating habits.
-
2️⃣ Comparison culture: Influencers who shame their followers often utilize comparison as a means of motivation. By showcasing their own physique and abilities as a standard instead of potential, they create a sense of inadequacy in their audience.
-
3️⃣ Guilt-tripping: Some fitness influencers use guilt as a tool to motivate their followers. They may make individuals feel guilty for indulging in their favorite foods or missing a workout. This creates a vicious cycle of negative emotions and can lead to an unhealthy relationship with food and exercise.
-
4️⃣ Unattainable expectations: Shame-based motivation often sets unrealistic expectations for individuals, making them believe they should achieve drastic results in a short period. These practices are not sustainable, and the consequences on physical and mental health can be severe.
-
5️⃣ Ignoring individual circumstances: Influencers who shame their audience fail to consider the impact of genetics, lifestyle, mental health, or personal circumstance on someone's fitness journey.
-
Influencers have a responsibility to promote positivity, inclusivity, and self-love. Let's encourage them to inspire their audience through compassionate guidance, realistic expectations, and celebrating the destination AND the journey. 💪❤️
