Surgeon Uses Apple Vision Pro to Perform Cataract Surgery in Medical First Eric Rosenberg of SightMD has become the first surgeon to perform cataract surgery using the Apple Vision Pro, marking a significant milestone in medical innovation.
First carried out in October 2025 and announced in April 2026, the procedure leverages the ScopeR to deliver immersive, high resolution 3D visualization directly into the surgeon's field of view.
Instead of relying on traditional operating microscopes, the system streams live stereoscopic 3D feeds from digital surgical equipment into the headset. This allows surgeons to operate with enhanced depth perception while simultaneously accessing real time data such as patient diagnostics and pre operative information, all within their line of sight.
The technology also enables remote collaboration, allowing other specialists to virtually join procedures and observe exactly what the operating surgeon sees. Since the initial operation, Eric Rosenberg has successfully used this setup in hundreds of cataract surgeries, demonstrating its practical viability in clinical settings.
This advancement highlights the growing role of mixed reality in healthcare, offering improved surgical precision, better training opportunities, and expanded access to expert care in ophthalmology.
