🍎πŸ₯¦ Five Food Groups For Growing Kids πŸ₯›πŸž

When it comes to feeding little ones, balance matters. For children ages 1–5, offering foods from all five food groups each day helps support growth, strong bones, brain development, and lasting energy.

A simple daily guide:
πŸ“ Fruits: 3–4 servings
πŸ₯• Vegetables: 3–4 servings
🍞 Whole Grains: 5–6 servings
πŸ₯› Dairy: 4–5 servings
πŸ₯š Protein: 4 servings

Small portions add up throughout the day. Think variety, color, and simple meals built from what you already have at home.

πŸ’™ WIC foods like milk, yogurt, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, eggs, beans, and peanut butter can help you build balanced meals your child will actually eat.

This is what public health leadership looks like. πŸ’™

During Black History Month, we honor Dr. Marilyn Hughes Gaston β€” physician, 🩺 trailblazer, ✨ and national public health leader. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

Dr. Gaston broke barriers at the highest levels of public health:
βœ”οΈ First Black female physician to direct HRSA’s Bureau of Primary Health Care
βœ”οΈ Second Black woman to serve as Assistant Surgeon General
βœ”οΈ Achieved the rank of Rear Admiral in the U.S. Public Health Service
βœ”οΈ Honored with every Public Health Service award

Her sickle cell research led to legislation requiring early screening for infants, transforming care for thousands of families. Her leadership expanded access to primary care and strengthened systems serving communities nationwide.

Black History Month is about honoring those who paved the way and continuing the work.

Share to inspire the next generation of public health leaders. πŸ’›πŸ’™

Are you protected against measles?

North Carolina has reported 22 measles cases since late December, including cases in the Charlotte metro region that includes Iredell County. Some cases have not been linked to travel, which means local spread is occurring in parts of our region.

Measles spreads very easily, but vaccination is a safe and effective way to protect yourself and those around you.

You may already be protected if you:
βœ”οΈ Received the MMR vaccine
βœ”οΈ Had measles confirmed with a lab test
βœ”οΈ Were born before 1957
πŸ›‘οΈ Two doses of MMR are about 97% effective at preventing measles and often provide lifelong protection.

NCDHHS is urging vaccination for everyone age 1 and older. In areas experiencing community transmission, providers may also recommend early MMR vaccination for infants 6–11 months old.
If you’re unsure about your immunity, talk with your healthcare provider about testing or vaccination.

We all know smoking is dangerous. 🚬

American Heart Month is a good reminder of something just as important: your heart can heal after the breakup. πŸ’”βž‘οΈβ€οΈ

The healing starts sooner than most people realize.
⏱️ Within 20 minutes, your heart rate and blood pressure begin to drop.
🩸 Within 2 weeks, your circulation improves.
πŸ“‰ Within 1 year, your risk of a heart attack is cut in half.
🌱 After 10–15 years without smoking, your risk of heart disease and cancer drops close to that of someone who never smoked.

If you’re in North Carolina, free support is available 24/7 through QuitlineNC!
