It’s been since July, but I’m finally getting around to posting the pics from my time volunteering with Warriors to Quiet Waters. I’m honored to be a part of this program and ALL that they do for post 9/11 veterans.

Effective immediately, Shenandoah National Park’s streams and rivers are closed to fishing due to low stream flows and high water temperatures. Despite the recent rainfall, streams and groundwater conditions have not recovered sufficiently.

Dry conditions have led to extremely low stream flows throughout the Park, including some river sections that are completely dry. Under low-flow conditions, high water temperatures occur with hot weather.

Low flows and high temperatures create extremely stressful conditions for fish, and dissolved oxygen can decline to fatal conditions. Some mortalities have been documented this month. The additional stress of angling during these conditions could harm the native brook trout populations. This closure is for all streams to including both open-to-harvest and catch-and-release waters.

While it is rare, the Park has occasionally closed fishing in the past in response to similar conditions.

Our Story

A veteran owned and operated company specializing in Virginia guided fly fishing trips.

Bull Mountain Guide Service came to be after owner Phillip Kauffman found a passion for fly fishing in 2016. A Marine Veteran with 13 years service, two deployments and a war injury behind him – he was invited to become a part of Healing Waters, an organization that focuses on Veterans and fishing.

Working with Healing Waters grew a love for the art of fly fishing, and Phillip found wading the streams to be the best therapy for life. Phillip traveled to Montana and graduated from Gallatin River Guide school in 2018 and has continued to grow his business in teaching others the love of fly fishing.
