In 2017, Selma Smith came into our care with almost no story at all. We knew her name. That was about it. No family. No history. No one to claim her. At her passing, she was deemed indigent, and local law enforcement arranged for her cremation. With no one to receive her, she remained with us.
For years, her story sat quietly but at Henry Funeral Home, we believe no one should be forgotten. So we kept working and in 2026, our ongoing research paid off - we discovered Selma was Jewish. She even had a family burial plot waiting for her up north. But there was one problem: it was in an Orthodox Jewish cemetery, where cremation is not permitted.
It was a tough moment that nearly felt like a dead end .. at least until our wonderful community stepped in. We connected with Temple House of Israel Cemetery here in Staunton on N. Augusta Street. It is a Reform Jewish cemetery that does allow cremation. Not only did they provide her a burial space but also arranged for a grave marker to be erected.

Stories like Selmaโs are why we do what we do. Historically, we have enjoyed partnerships with some local cemeteries to provide respectful resting places for unclaimed individuals. But recently, weโve seen an opportunity to do more - to give names, stories, and connections back to those who had none.
It is for these people, many living in the shadows or at the edges of society, that our funeral home has begun an initiative to go beyond simply caring for unclaimed individuals.
Through in-depth research, persistence, and deeper investigations, weโre reconnecting these individuals with their stories. Sometimes we have been able to reunite them with long-lost family. In other cases, we are able to find them a place alongside loved ones in cemeteries across the country - wherever the research trail takes us. Doing this level of investigation takes time and effort. But it matters.
It matters because our guarantee of exceptional family care doesnโt stop with traditional services ... and for those whose stories were almost lost, for those who lived quietly, and for those who were too often overlooked - your stories will be discovered and they will be told. You will be remembered.
