We are so glad to be helping our community knock out these sports physicals for our young athletes.

Today, however, we had an onslaught! Our normal patient tally was doubled today with many athletes barely missing today's deadline. (I didn't know there was a deadline, but it became clear after we squeezed in 15 athletes just in the morning.)

Moving forward for those that need a clearance: We offer sports physicals for $10 for students grades 6-12 in the NSSD/Santiam Canyon. We will consider other school districts if the clearance requirements are similar. Please provide these forms in advance.

These clearances are provided YEAR ROUND! We do not have to wait until CRUNCH TIME! If there is even a chance your athlete might play sports, bring them in at the *beginning* of summer to beat the rush.

These are on a walk-in basis only and scheduled patients take priority. Depending on the time of day, there might be a little bit of a wait. Everyone has been very understanding of this, so thank you and lets keep it going. The best times to come are Tuesday through Thursday, 8-11 a.m. and 1-3:00 p.m.

Unfortunately, there are times when an athlete has a complicated health history or problems that require more investigation than we can provide for this particular service. If you know your athlete has a complicated history, it is probably best to seek the clearance through their established primary care provider who already knows them. While we are accepting new patients, these appointments are pushed out for a couple months. We are happy to become their primary care home to address concerns and ensure they can play safely, but we won't be able to provide a clearance until at least that first appointment.

Lastly, while we recently moved into a larger building, it became apparent today that space can become limited quickly. Our lobby was incredibly full and out of seating today. If possible, we ask that only the people that need to be present for the physical are there. We just don't have room for a group of 3-4 people if there is only one athlete needing a clearance.

We are so excited for everyone choosing to play this year and we are proud to help make it happen! Thanks, Everyone!

It's that time of year again! Time for sports physicals for your junior high and high school athletes. We provide these walk-in sports physicals for only $10 year round, but wanted to remind you before it's crunch time. You do not need to be an existing patient, we are here to keep our whole community active and healthy!

(Given the nature of walk-in visits, we appreciate your reciprocated patience and flexibility!)

This is not something I would usually do but when I learned today that UnitedHealth and OHSU might not come to a contract agreement by the end of this month and all patients with UnitedHealth will be turned away from very needed specialists, I can no longer remain quiet.

At least over the past five years, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find specialized care when our patients need it. This is because health insurances are often not willing to pay the amounts needed for an organization to remain operational. If the organization and the insurance cannot come to an agreement, the organization will fall out of network for the patient. When this happens, it leaves large groups of patients scrambling to find a specialist that does take their insurance.

Some examples that have happened in the past two years locally include the following:

-Salem Hospital is no longer in network with Regence/BlueCross
-Samaritan Health no longer takes UnitedHealth
-PeaceHealth and PacificSource may terminate their agreement by next month

There are many other examples, but these ones are especially alarming to us. It is becoming increasingly more difficult to refer patients to needed specialists. Often the referrals are declined or the wait list is very long--too long.

There are laws that require health insurance companies to provide network adequacy. Network adequacy means that insurances must guarantee patients have access to needed care in a timely manner within a reasonable distance to include primary care providers, specialists and mental health. Real network adequacy has been a long-standing problem and the recent network status changes have only made it worse.

The long and the short of it is, insurance companies need to pay healthcare organizations more. The insurance companies are making record profits as patients are paying more and more out of pocket with monthly premiums, office and medication co-pays, deductibles and out-of-pocket family maximums.

So, what can we do about it? The Oregon Division of Financial Regulation is responsible for enforcing the laws and codes with health insurance companies. I am encouraging anyone who has had to wait unreasonable amounts of time or travel unreasonable distances for their health care needs because of inadequate network adequacy file a complaint. We need to start speaking out.

I am attaching the link in the comments that you can file a complaint online. I am also attaching my resource regarding network adequacy and the article about OHSU and UnitedHealth.

Let's push for change from the ground up!

Canyon Family Health

Canyon Family Health is a primary health care clinic here to serve the needs of the Santiam Canyon. Its provider, Maria Fife, has been a board-certified family nurse practitioner since 2014 and is committed to serving her hometown community. Her healthcare interests include wellness and preventive care, chronic disease management and coordination (diabetes, hypertension, mental health), and basic women’s health. She is also buprenorphine waivered to combat the opioid crisis by managing the care of people with substance use disorder.

We hope to open the doors to the clinic July 30th. We are currently working on the credentialing process so we can accept all local insurances. Stay tuned for information about signing up to be a patient. We look forward to helping you meet your health goals!
