With all the new faces on here, I figured it was time to reintroduce myself!

First, welcome! Im so glad you’re here.

As weird as social media can be (seriously, wtf?) my goal in being on this app is getting to connect with other Pilates and Gyrotonic teachers and geeking out on the science of movement with plenty of nuance all while still keeping it fun.

Now it’s your turn! I’d love to hear from you! Please say hi in the comments! 👋🏼🤓

Sharing another clip from the MDL Geek Out: The Shoulder for episode 2 of Applied Anatomy. 🤗

This is a great example of what I’m talking about when I talk about the importance of movement teachers understanding beyond the basics of anatomy. Our Pilates and Gyrotonic trainings typically don’t include this level of understanding.

Basic anatomy = you know the names of a few things like the humerus and the scapula

Knowing joint kinematics = you know the shapes of the joints and bones so you understand why something like external rotation of the humerus can be helpful during abduction and flexion

Be sure to save this post as a reference for the next time you’re teaching a client with shoulder impingement or to help you better cue the shoulders.

Another MDL Geek Out in the books!

Over the weekend, I taught the MDL Geek Out on the Shoulders. From anatomical basics, to joint and skeletal muscle kinematics, to common pathologies, we covered it all.

This course was exactly the course I wished I could have taken as a young Pilates teacher still dealing with my own shoulder injuries.

It’s also a course that instead of teaching 1000 new shoulder exercises, we covered the framework of how our shoulders actually move from an anatomical basis so that you can teach any exercise more clearly, program more effectively, and know how to triage if something doesn’t feel right.

I am so thrilled to finally release this into the world.

My geeky heart is full.

Thank you again to everyone who registered, joined me live, and to those who registered to watch the replay. Your support means the world to me.

And I can’t wait to geek out with you next time!

As someone with a PhD, MSc, & BA, I know how expensive, time consuming, and frankly, just how inaccessible academia really is.

So if you’re someone who doesn’t have a bachelor’s or master’s in exercise science, I get it.

BUT, if you’re also a Pilates or Gyrotonic or yoga or even a personal trainer, I cannot strongly encourage you enough to pursue continuing education to fill in the gaps.

The more you understand anatomy, skeletal muscle physiology and how our bodies adapt to exercise the easier it is to teach. Cues make more sense. Programming is second nature. And your clients get results faster. Especially when a client comes in need more than just a “good workout.”

This is why I hope you’ll join me this Saturday, March 28th. I’m teaching a 5 hour workshop covering everything you need to know about the shoulders. It’s going to be a mini college course without the absurd assignments and a hell of a lot more fun.

Early bird registration is now open! 🦅

Honestly, shoulders are my favorite. They’re undeniably complex but when you understand how they move everything becomes so much easier. As someone who personally struggled with my own shoulder health, I know just how frustrating this area can be and how debilitating it is when shoulders aren’t moving their best.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Oftentimes, learning how an area is designed to move and then deliberately strength training what’s weak is a game changer.

This is why I am creating the MDL Geek Outs. I know our movement trainings fall short on adequately providing enough exercise science to really help clients as much as we want.

And this is also why I’m so stoked to teach our next MDL Geek Out Saturday, March 28th. We’re going to cover the anatomy, shoulder kinematics, current research, common pathologies, and I’ll walk you through the applied movement framework I use with all my clients to make sure their shoulders are feeling their best.

If you’re ready to level up your shoulder knowledge, head to the link in my bio to take advantage of the best pricing and some special early bird bonuses.

I can’t wait to geek out with you!

The answer to yesterday’s movement jeopardy question is?

No! We should not expect my elbows to go higher. My shoulders went beyond a 40 degrees of glenohumeral extension.

Now, could they go higher if I elevated my scapulas, if I went into trunk flexion, or if I was someone who simply had a greater ROM? Sure. But if we’re just focusing on glenohumeral extension 40-50 degrees is a very normal ROM. Of course there can be outliers but what you see here is a very typical ROM.

And full disclosure, this is about 7 degrees short of my full range. I purposely limited my ROM because I wanted to show a healthy range that it seems many personally view as ‘tight’ just because it may be less than their own. 🙈💀

Questions? Comments?

And if you’d like to learn more about our incredibly amazing shoulders, I hope you’ll join me this Thursday, March 19th for a FREE live mini workshop on the scapulas. Head to the link in my bio to save your seat!

Movement jeopardy time! 🤓🔥

Alright, here I am doing a seated Pilates chair dip variation. It’s a split pedal chair with the springs set on a moderate-light weight (2 white springs set on the 3rd cactus hook from the bottom 🌵). I set it lighter to show range of motion (ROM) unhindered by load.

What do you think? Should my elbows be lifting higher?

This you? 🙋🏼‍♀️

Which, no shame here!

As a PhD in Kinesiology & a certified Pilates & Gyrotonic Method teacher know our trainings fall short on teaching arthrokinematics, skeletal muscle lines of pull, and oftentimes I think theirs a “just do what I do” kind of mentality when it comes to teaching *how* the body moves. 🙃🙈

So, if any of these resonated with you, or even if you’re just a hella big movement nerd and love learning as much as possible, I hope you’ll join me next Thursday, March 19th at 10:30 AM Mountain time. I’ll be teaching scapular mechanics plus three of my favorite ways to get the shoulders feeling their best.

Can’t make the live class? No problem! I’ll send a recording for all who register!
