COVID-19 Third Vaccine Dose Information
On Aug. 13, CDC/ACIP approved a third dose of mRNA vaccine (Moderna or Pfizer) for people who are immunocompromised. (The CDC/ACIP did not make any recommendations for additional doses of COVID vaccine for immunocompromised patients who received the Johnson & Johnson/Janssen vaccine.)
Eligible patients include those who:
Are receiving active treatment for solid tumor and hematologic malignancies or have a diagnosis of cancer in the past 12 months
Have received solid-organ transplant and are taking immunosuppressive therapy
Have received CAR-T-cell or hematopoietic stem cell transplant (within two years of transplantation or are taking immunosuppression therapy)
Have a primary immunodeficiency (e.g., DiGeorge syndrome, Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome)
Have advanced or untreated HIV infection (CD4 count < 200)
Are receiving active treatment with high-dose corticosteroids (i.e., ≥20mg prednisone or equivalent per day for more than 14 days), alkylating agents, antimetabolites, transplant-related immunosuppressive drugs, cancer chemotherapeutic agents classified as severely immunosuppressive, tumor-necrosis (TNF) blockers, and other biologic agents that are immunosuppressive or immunomodulatory.
Have chronic medical conditions such as asplenia and chronic renal disease, (dialysis patients and patients with proteinuria).
