Many kids struggle with communicative confidence. This is especially true for those with communication delays and those with a history of complianced-based speech therapy (or other therapies). Here are some tips for building a positive relationship with communication while also addressing areas of need! #SpeechTherapy #SLP #slpsofinstagram #communication #pediatricslp #parentingtips #parenting #speechlanguagepathologist #mentalhealthsupport #neuroaffirming #neuroaffirmingpractice
Has your child been identified as a Gestalt Language Processor?
Gestalt Language Processors learn language in chunks and phrases, rather than single words. They tune into the cadence, intonation, and emotions behind a phrase more so than isolating words. GLPs often use strands of language they've heard in order to communicate, which is called delayed echolalia.
For example, when a GLP falls down, they may say "Are you okay?" rather than "I'm okay!" because they are referencing other times they have fallen down and what others tend to say.
There are several stages of Natural Language Acquisition. In this clip, you can hear a GLP start to break down scripts and apply new language to create some novel phrases! Take a look/listen to see how language can evolve for GLPs!
Not all GLPs require speech therapy, but some do! If you have questions about your child's development, feel free to reach out!
