Task initiation is the ability to start a task without prompting or delay. It’s what helps kids move from “I know what to do” to actually getting started.

In therapy, we support this executive functioning skill by breaking tasks into manageable steps, using visual cues and creating predictable routines so kids can begin more independently and with less frustration.

SLP Katie Robertson led an in-house training on 3D printing for special education. She shared practical ways to create customized therapy tools for use in therapy and with assistive technology. From safety and setup to keyguards, switches and beyond, it was a hands-on look at how innovation can support better outcomes for our little friends.

💡 Quick parent tip: Before correcting behavior, try a 20-second body check with your child.

Ask: “Is your body moving fast or slow?” “Is your tummy feeling comfy or tight?” “Do you need to move, to take a drink or to get a really big hug?”

That’s called interoception: our body’s internal GPS and one of our lesser-known senses! When kids can name how they feel, meltdowns get shorter and transitions get smoother because you’re solving the root problem.
