Coach Prime is back!

After a surprise bladder cancer diagnosis earlier this year, Deion Sanders has returned to Boulder, cancer-free and ready to lead the Colorado Buffaloes Football team this season. Deion credits his faith, a routine scan and Dr. Janet Kukreja, a UCHealth and CU Medicine surgeon and national leader in robotic bladder cancer surgery.

“I trusted and believed in you 100%,” Coach Prime told Dr. Kukreja, who performed the life-saving surgery on the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus and built him a new bladder from his intestine.

His message to fans? “Get checked out. Don’t wait.”

Sonny Hutchison was gearing up for one of life’s biggest milestones, his son’s wedding, when a mosquito bite changed everything. Already living with pulmonary fibrosis and rheumatoid arthritis, Sonny contracted West Nile virus and was hospitalized for three weeks. He missed the wedding, spent weeks relearning how to walk and faced lingering vision and balance issues.

The renowned Denver producer and photographer fought his way back with the help of his UCHealth care team. From retinal specialists to vestibular therapists, every step of his recovery was guided by experts who tailored care to help Sonny regain his mobility, strength and spirit. Slowly, he began to see results.

Sonny has reclaimed his creative energy and sense of balance. He’s still healing, but he’s also planning future travels and savoring the life he’s regained.

As summer returns, Sonny wants others to learn from his experience. “When it comes to West Nile and its prevalence in Colorado, you need to be thoughtful about it,” he said. His advice? Use repellent. Cover up. Protect yourself.

Sonny Hutchison, a Denver media figure, faced many complications from West Nile virus and highlights the importance of prevention.

When a CT scan revealed a mass on his bladder, University of Colorado Boulder football coach Deion "Coach Prime" Sanders was immediately referred to – a national leader in bladder cancer care – where he met with Janet Kukreja, MD, director of urologic oncology at the University of Colorado Cancer Center and UCHealth. After thorough examination, he was diagnosed with a malignant tumor in his bladder.

Drawn to CU Anschutz in 2018 for its National Cancer Institute designation, Dr. Kukreja is now a national leader in robotic bladder cancer surgeries. Using advanced robotic technology, surgeons on our campus are treating bladder cancer in ways that are less invasive, less traumatic and allow for faster recovery – while also pioneering new drug therapies that are reshaping outcomes.

Today, Dr. Kukreja says Coach Prime is cancer free – thanks to expert care and cutting-edge surgical innovation. Read more about his story and the groundbreaking cancer research happening every day at CU Anschutz, here: https://bit.ly/41aBaCW
