I learned this in my Functional Nutrition Alliance Class a few years back and thought it was very interesting.
Did you know…
We are not what we eat, but what we ASSIMILATE.
Contrary to what many believe, digestion does not start in the stomach, or even in the mouth
Digestion starts in the brain. That’s right, the BRAIN.
Digestion starts when:
• We take the time to prepare our food, and when we are thinking about the food we’re going to eat.
• When we see and smell our food. One reason why smellvertising works so well on us. Have you ever been out somewhere and smelled food and knew you just had to have it?
• When we take the time to bless and really be thankful for our food.
While all of this is going on our brain begins to send signals that start the processes of digestion like creating saliva and enzymes that will assist in the break down, digestion, and absorption of the food to come.
This is called the Cephalic Phase of digestion.
When we maximize the benefits of the Cephalic Phase of digestion, and take the time to better chew our food, we pave the way for better digestion the whole way through.
