Visualization of a calendar year has always been a very linear picture in my head, and hitting December feels a bit like getting to the bottom of a scroll for me. A completion of sorts. I have always derived some serious amount of pleasure from completion for some reason. I love completely using up....

Curious about dry needling? Whether you're considering trying it or just want to learn more, here are answers to five frequently asked questions about dry needling:

1️⃣ Is dry needling the same as acupuncture?
No, while both use thin needles, dry needling is based on Western medicine principles and targets specific muscle trigger points, while acupuncture is based on traditional Chinese medicine and focuses on energy flow along meridians.

2️⃣ Does dry needling hurt?
Most patients describe a brief pinch or sting when the needle is inserted, followed by a dull ache or muscle twitch. While not usually described as painful, sensations can vary from person to person.

3️⃣ What conditions can dry needling help treat?
Dry needling can be effective for various musculoskeletal issues, including chronic pain, muscle tension, headaches, fibromyalgia, tendinitis, and myofascial pain syndrome.

4️⃣ Are there any side effects or risks associated with dry needling?
Common side effects include temporary soreness, minor bleeding, or bruising at the needle site.

5️⃣ Can I exercise or return to normal activities after a dry needling session?
Generally, you can return to normal activities immediately. However, it's often recommended to avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours after treatment to allow your body to respond optimally.

Remember, every patient is unique, and your experience may vary. If you have more questions or want to know if dry needling could be right for you, don't hesitate to reach out for a personalized consultation.

In our increasingly digital world, many of us spend hours hunched over devices, whether for work, school, or leisure. This posture can lead to "tech neck" - strain on the neck and upper back causing pain and headaches. But don't worry, I've got some simple exercises to help combat this modern malady!

First, let's talk prevention:
✅ Hold devices at eye level when possible
✅ Take frequent breaks (try the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds)
✅ Be mindful of your posture

Now, onto the exercises:
1️⃣ Chin Tucks: Draw your chin back, creating a "double chin." Hold 5 seconds, repeat 10 times.
2️⃣ Shoulder Blade Squeezes: Squeeze shoulder blades together. Hold 5 seconds, repeat 10 times.
3️⃣ Neck Rotations: Slowly turn head side to side, holding briefly at each end.
4️⃣ Upper Trapezius Stretch: Tilt head to one side, ear towards shoulder. Hold 15-30 seconds each side.
5️⃣ Chest Opener: Clasp hands behind back, gently lift arms and open chest. Hold 15-30 seconds.

Aim to do these every couple of hours during long device sessions. Consistency is key!

Pelvic floor issues can affect people of all genders and ages, not just women who have given birth. A pelvic floor PT can provide personalized treatment to improve your quality of life and overall health.

Here are 5 common reasons to see a pelvic floor physical therapist:

1️⃣ Urinary Incontinence: If you're experiencing involuntary leakage of urine, especially when coughing, sneezing, or exercising, a pelvic floor PT can help. This issue is common but not normal, and can often be significantly improved with proper treatment.

2️⃣ Pelvic Pain: Chronic pelvic pain, pain during in*******se, or discomfort in the lower abdomen, ge****ls, or re**um can all be addressed by a pelvic floor physical therapist.

3️⃣ Pregnancy and Postpartum Care: Pelvic floor PTs can help prepare your body for childbirth and assist in recovery afterwards. They can address issues like diastasis recti (abdominal separation), pelvic organ prolapse, and general postpartum discomfort.

4️⃣ Bowel Dysfunction: If you're dealing with constipation, f***l incontinence, or difficulty with bowel movements, a pelvic floor PT can provide exercises and techniques to improve bowel function.

5️⃣ Pelvic Organ Prolapse: This condition, where pelvic organs descend from their normal position, can be managed and often improved with pelvic floor physical therapy. A PT can teach you exercises and strategies to support your pelvic organs and improve symptoms.

We all know water is essential for life, but did you know it's also crucial for optimal physical function? Here's why: Your body's tissues, including muscles and the cartilage in your joints, are largely made up of water. When you're well-hydrated, these tissues can move and function smoothly. But when you're dehydrated, you're more prone to muscle cramps, joint pain, and even decreased flexibility.

Proper hydration does more than just quench your thirst. It helps transport nutrients to your cells, lubricates your joints, regulates your body temperature, and aids in flushing out waste products that can contribute to inflammation. For my patients recovering from injuries or managing chronic conditions, staying hydrated can make a significant difference in their progress and pain levels.

So, how much should you drink? While the old "8 glasses a day" rule is a good starting point, your needs may vary based on factors like your activity level, climate, and overall health. A good rule of thumb is to drink enough so that your urine is pale yellow. And remember, you can also get hydration from foods like fruits and vegetables. If you're dealing with muscle or joint issues, paying attention to your hydration could be a simple yet effective step towards feeling better.

As a physical therapist with a cash-based practice, I've made a conscious choice to put my patients in the driver's seat of their healthcare journey. Too often, I hear from folks who feel trapped by what their insurance will or won't cover, rather than focusing on what their bodies truly need.

Let me be clear: You should be in control of your health decisions, not your insurance company. By operating outside the constraints of insurance, I'm able to offer personalized, high-quality care without the limitations of predetermined visit numbers or treatment protocols. Every body is unique, and cookie-cutter approaches rarely lead to optimal results.

In my practice, I offer a range of services - from traditional PT to specialized treatments like craniosacral therapy and pelvic health care. While the idea of paying out-of-pocket might seem daunting at first, many of my patients find it liberating. They appreciate the transparency in pricing, the undivided attention they receive, and the freedom to choose treatments that best suit their needs. I'm committed to providing value for your investment.

Remember, you're not just a policy number - you're a person deserving of personalized, effective care that puts your health first.
