Why Yoga for Teen Girls? I started doing yoga just after my teen years in my early 20s. I actually did a project on yoga and its benefits during Occupational Therapy school 25 years ago. Most people didn't even know the word "yoga" let alone what it was then. I was having some health issues and somehow I got my fiancé (now husband) and my dad (who happened to be working on that side of the state) to go with me to a yoga class in someone's home and later to an adult education class. Our teacher, Eve, was an elderly woman who was the sweetest soul and sometimes it was just the 3 of us and our teacher Eve our classes. We all felt so incredibly relaxed after an evening session and it truly helped us all manage our stressful lives of school and work. I sometimes wonder how yoga could have supported me through my teen years had I learned it earlier. Being a teen is hard on so many levels and it is really astonishing to me how many kids are identifying with anxiety and stress now. I don't think I could have relayed to anyone what anxiety was as a teen, but I think of some of the most stressful situations and wonder if I could have utilized the benefits then. Throughout the past 25+ years, I have worked with adults, kids and teens through the lens of occupational therapy and yoga therapy. I have watched many girls in my yoga/social girls' groups develop body awareness, gain confidence, learn breathing techniques to help with anxiety and sleep. The stress in the world isn't going to go away, but we can learn ways to manage it better and ease the burden of challenging moments. We can become kinder to ourselves and others and yoga is a great practice that can be done anywhere and at anytime, although learning with others and creating a supportive learning group can help us to connect to ourselves and to others.
Yoga for Teen Girls is starting this February, Tuesdays from 4:15-5:15. A 30-60 minute individual intake ($50) is required prior to the first class unless you are a current yoga or occupation therapy client at Aspen Grove Therapy & Wellness Center, LLC. The girls' class is 4 sessions for $75. No yoga experience necessary. Please call me (Karen Oberg, OTR/L, IAYT) at 406-239-5820 to schedule an intake, register or ask any question.
