National Social Workers Month
Can we acknowledge Social Workers? They are often unrecognized and generally unappreciated heroes.
They are doers, sources of connection, listeners. They help us find our way through so many of life’s challenges. This is a profession much deserving of the recognition a National Month signifies. I salute, honor, respect and very much appreciate the service your calling (and it is a calling) brings to others.

A reflection on end-of-life care…

There is something I wish more people understood about hospice and end-of-life care.

When someone receives a terminal diagnosis and hospice is suggested, it is because the disease process is already unfolding in ways that medicine can no longer stop or reverse. By the time someone begins receiving end-of-life care, their body has already begun the work of letting go.

We cannot change the outcome, none of us holds that power. Our role, whether we are a member of the hospice team, end-of-life doulas, caregivers, or family members sitting quietly at the bedside, is to advocate, to comfort, and to reduce suffering wherever we can. We ease pain, calm symptoms, listen closely, and tend to the physical, emotional and spiritual weight that often arrives in these moments. Sometimes, when comfort replaces crisis, people are gifted a little more time, which no one could have predicted, but time is never something we can promise.

In this work, we are not the driver of the bus. The course of the illness is not ours to control. Instead, we sit beside the passenger and make sure they are not traveling alone. We show up with presence, with care, and with love.

My hope for every person who is dying is that they are cared for well, that they feel seen and held, and that their landing is soft. At the end of the day, I truly believe that anyone who is providing end-of-life care has this goal in mind.

A couple of months ago, I was talking with my granddaughter and mentioned my mom. She looked at me and said, “You have a mom?” Of course she said that, my mother died thirty years ago. She never met her, and I realize now that I’ve hardly shared stories about her at all.

That moment reminded me of something important: if we don’t say their name, if we don’t tell their story, if we don’t carry their legacy forward, no one else will. And eventually, their story falls silent.

Sometimes we hold back. We worry that saying their name will make others uneasy, especially after a recent loss, or on an anniversary that weighs a little heavier on the heart. Inside, we might be aching to speak about them, to honor them, to let the world know how much they are still woven into our days. But out of protection for others, we stay quiet.

I wish we lived in a culture that welcomed these stories, where remembering someone wasn’t seen as reopening a wound, but as keeping love alive. Where legacy wasn’t something fragile, but something we tended to together. I think we are getting there, but I also think we could do better.

So say their name. Tell their story. Share their legacy. Live in a way they would be proud of.

They may not be here in the way they once were, but they are still here, carried in the breath of every memory we choose to speak aloud.
