You walk into a family holiday gathering with your child in tow. Aunt Kathy bends down and stretches out her arms to your little one: “Come over here and give me a big hug!” Your kid gets quiet, shakes their head “no” and grabs on to you. You nudge them to comply: “Aw, come on, go hug your Auntie. You haven’t seen her in forever!”

Your intentions here are good: You don’t want to hurt a loved one’s feelings, or for your kid to seem rude. But by pressuring a child to show affection when they don’t want to, you may be sending mixed messages, albeit inadvertently, about who is in charge of their body.

Parents may have good intentions, but pressuring a child to show affection when they don't want to can send the wrong message.

Recovering from childhood trauma is a long and difficult journey that can be aided by a mental health professional who is well-trained in the dynamics associated with addiction and abuse in the home. Unfortunately, such training is not a required component of mental health curricula, exposing survivors to the risk of misguided (or even dangerous) advice from the professionals in whom they have placed their trust.

Yet again, we are fielding multiple reports of residents receiving calls from someone claiming to be a WCSO deputy. To seem even more convincing, the scammers have "spoofed" our real dispatch phone number to appear as if the call is coming from our office and are using real deputies' names. This is a scam, and you have our full permission to hang up on them.

Remember, we will NOT call you if you have a warrant, and we will NEVER ask for money or gift cards over the phone. The names and circumstances of these scam calls may change, but remember to NEVER give out any personal or financial information over the phone. If a call seems suspicious, hang up and dial 911. We'll be more than happy to clear it up for you.

If you are concerned you may have a warrant, you can visit our website at www.wcso.info and click the "warrant search" tab. If you have elderly family and friends, please talk to them and warn them of the current scams occurring in our area.
