🩵Early Signs of Lymphedema People Often Miss🩵

🦋It doesn’t always start with big, obvious swelling.
Sometimes it whispers first.

• shoes suddenly feel tighter — especially on one side
• socks leave deep marks in the skin
• jewelry feels snug or hard to remove
• a feeling of heaviness or “fullness” in a limb
• skin feels tight or harder than usual
• clothing fits differently on one side
• frequent aching, throbbing, or fatigue in the limb
• swelling that shows up by evening and looks “normal” again by morning(early stage)

🩵These signs are easy to brush off — but catching them early matters.
Early treatment can help protect tissue, reduce complications, and slow progression.

🦋If you notice changes that don’t go away, talk to your doctor or a certified lymphedema therapist. Advocating early isn’t overreacting — it’s taking care of your body. 🩵🦋

“Why is he coloring against the mirror?”

Ms. Amy is here to tell us:
🧠 Cognitive & Developmental Benefits
• Improves focus and attention: The change in posture and movement helps engage the brain differently than seated tasks.
• Encourages spatial awareness: Working vertically helps with understanding position, direction, and distance — important for writing and visual-motor skills.

💪 Physical & Motor Skill Benefits
• Strengthens shoulder and arm muscles: Reaching up and out helps develop upper body and shoulder stability — key for fine motor control later.
• Enhances wrist extension: Holding and moving a crayon or marker on a wall keeps the wrist in an extended position, improving writing endurance and control.
• Improves core strength and posture: Standing and reaching while coloring engages the core and back muscles for balance and stability.
• Develops bilateral coordination: Kids use one hand to stabilize the paper or surface and the other to color — practicing coordination between both sides of the body.
• Refines fine motor skills: The vertical angle naturally encourages proper hand and finger positioning, strengthening the muscles needed for writing.

👀 Visual & Perceptual Benefits
• Improves visual tracking: The eyes must move up and down or side to side across a larger space, which strengthens the muscles used for reading and scanning.
• Supports eye-hand coordination: Matching where the eyes look and where the hands move on a vertical plane builds precision.

😊 Emotional & Sensory Benefits
• Engages sensory feedback: The resistance of coloring against a vertical surface provides strong proprioceptive input (awareness of body position and movement).
• Reduces stress: Large, sweeping arm motions and tactile feedback can be calming and regulating.

Our Story

We are dedicated to providing quality Speech and Swallowing Therapy services to you. Our services cover a continuum of care from pediatrics to geriatrics in order to meet the varied needs of the patients in our community. Our mission is to provide compassionate, personalized, and specialized evidence-based therapy services that allow both adults and children to overcome obstacles in order to accomplish their personal goals.

We evaluate and treat speech, language, fluency, cognition, oral motor, voice, feeding, and swallowing disorders of children, teens, and adults. We also provide services for augmentative and alternative communication and accent modification. We evaluate each individual to determine strengths and weaknesses, address personal and/or family concerns and goals, and develop an individual treatment plan that will incorporate the optimum therapy approach and techniques for that person. When appropriate, we educate families on the techniques that are utilized during each session in order to provide ideas of carryover through daily activities and establish home programs to promote maximum progress.
