The baby comes home. The photos get posted. The car seat is finally carried through your own front door.

But some parents are still back in that hospital room.

They still feel the pace of people moving quickly around the bed. They still hear alarms in the quiet. They still tense when the phone rings or when a provider walks in with a certain look. Years can pass, and the body remembers.

It might look like lying awake long after your baby has fallen asleep. Staring at their chest and counting breaths without meaning to. Feeling on edge and not knowing why. Losing your patience faster than you used to. Tears that show up out of nowhere. And future pregnancies that feel anxious instead of joyful.

I’ve known parents who felt guilty for struggling because their baby survived. They told themselves they should just feel grateful. But gratitude and trauma can sit in the same space. You can be thankful your child is here and still carry the weight of how they arrived.

NICU stays. Emergency deliveries. Surgical complications. Loss. Moments that felt out of control. Those experiences leave an imprint. Not because you are weak, but because you were scared and trying to hold it together at the same time.

If this feels familiar, what has made a difference for you? Maybe it was sitting with a counselor. Maybe leaning into your faith. Maybe medication. Maybe simply giving yourself time. Or maybe it was finding other NICU parents who didn’t need the whole backstory to understand.
