Thousands of black women have filed lawsuits against major beauty cosmetic retailers, claiming that their chemical hair straighteners are responsible for causing uterine cancer, fibroid tumors, and infertility. As a licensed cosmetologist and certified trichologist, I have always been opposed to the idea of chemicals being sold to unlicensed individuals. It is like putting matches in the hands of a child. Relaxers were designed to be applied only to the hair strands and not to the scalp, as they could cause scalp burns and allow chemicals to enter the bloodstream. I believe that the proper application of hair straighteners by a highly skilled and licensed cosmetologist could have been a safer method, which could have reduced the risk of health challenges. What are your thoughts on cosmetic companies allowing retailers and beauty supply stores to sell hair chemicals over the counter to unlicensed and untrained consumers? Also, do you think the cosmetic companies, retail stores, and beauty supply stores should be a part of the lawsuits? Let's have a professional conversation.

A lawsuit launched in 2022 claims many hair relaxers use chemicals that may be linked to uterine cancer diagnoses. Mike Spector, a U.S. corporate crisis correspondent at Reuters, joins CBS News with more on the lawsuit that claims these products were overwhelmingly marketed to women of color.
