Ever wondered what actually causes hiccups?
Dr. Zachowski explains that hiccups occur when the diaphragm, the muscle that helps you breathe, suddenly contracts. This contraction causes your vocal cords to close quickly, producing the familiar hiccup sound.
Common triggers can include eating too quickly, drinking carbonated beverages, spicy foods, or sudden temperature changes in the stomach.
In most cases, hiccups are harmless and go away on their own. However, if they last longer than 48 hours, it may be a sign that you should speak with a healthcare provider.
