Volunteer Spotlight: Jan Meyer

If you have seen handmade layettes like this at St. Joseph's Medical Center, you've likely seen the work of Jan Meyer. A grateful patient turned volunteer, Jan has been volunteering her time and talents to St. Joseph's since 2016.

As a member of the Sewing Committee, she applies her passion for sewing to create numerous comfort items for patients, including stuffed animals, specialty pillows and seat belt pads for cancer and heart patients, baby blankets, pocket prayer quilts, activity aprons, and, of course, layette sets like the one pictured here.

Handmade items take lots of time and love and carry with them a special kind of comfort nothing else can match.

Jan, we at St. Joseph's are all so grateful for all that you do for our patients. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you!

Employee Giving Spotlight: Michael Jennings!

Meet Michael, a proud SPIRIT Club donor whose deep ties to the community drive his passion for giving back through St. Joseph’s Foundation of San Joaquin. Michael gives back through payroll deduction to support programs close to his heart—Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) program.

"Through [St. Joseph's] partnership with San Jose State, we welcome two students for hands-on training in our lab each year. It's been rewarding to help support their education — not only through mentorship, but also by easing the financial burden of living expenses during their training. It’s a privilege to help shape the future of our profession."

Thank you, Michael, for your commitment to our mission and for paying it forward with heart and purpose!

The end of June brings a treasured tradition to St. Joseph’s Medical Center - a photo of new residents and fellows on the steps of the original hospital front.

In 2018, with support from the St. Joseph’s Foundation of San Joaquin, the Graduate Medical Education Program launched, with the goal of having 215 physicians training and serving our community by 2025. Our newest class of 83 new residents and 7 fellows, puts our 2025 total at 232.

By positioning ourselves as a teaching hospital, we are committing to bringing the best programs, technology and physicians to our region, physicians who otherwise may never have come to our community. We’re attracting future specialists in family medicine, emergency medicine, internal medicine, psychiatry, anesthesia, neurology, urology, orthopedic surgery, transitional year, cardiology, and critical care medicine.

These new specialists will directly serve our community, our friends and neighbors, offering healing and services that otherwise would require long travel to another region.

St. Joseph’s Foundation of San Joaquin is thrilled to announce Óscar Segura is stepping into a new role as Director of Philanthropy.

Philanthropy isn’t just a career for Óscar; it’s a calling. Prior to stepping into the nonprofit world, Óscar found his stride in people-focused roles, building relationships, trust, and connections. Congratulations, Óscar – We know you will do great things in your new role.

A gift to our community

St. Joseph’s legacy began in 1899 under the leadership of the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael.

No one present that day in 1899 could have likely imagined that the 25 bed, $35,000 home and hospital would grow into today’s 355 bed medical center with a history of firsts in cardiac, cancer, women’s and children’s, and emergency services, and now a major training center for physicians.

Just as the original opening of St. Joseph’s was a gift to our community, we remain committed to serving the needs of our community – today – and well into the future.

Despite vast changes and advancements in medicine and technology, St. Joseph’s continues to live out our mission of serving and advocating for our brothers and sisters who are poor and disenfranchised and partnering with others in the community to improve the quality of life.
