Listen… I get it. Nobody wants a call about p**p. Even me 🤪
But here’s the truth: constipation and p**p issues 💩 are by far the most common thing I see in pediatrics—like, not even close. I talk about p**p every single day. Yes, I’m that cool 😎
👍🏻 What’s normal?1–2 soft, easy-to-pass stools daily. Ideally something that politely curls at the bottom of the toilet.
👎🏻 What’s not normal?
-“Snickers”-like stools
- The Titanic rising out of the water
- Raisinets
- Going days without p**ping
- Skid marks or random squirts in underwear
- Clogging the toilet
- Peeing constantly (yes—p**p problems are a huge cause of p*e issues… even things like appendicitis)
🤔 What causes it?
Diet: Not enough fiber, too many processed/“white” foods (milk, cheese, yogurt, pasta, bread, rice, bananas), not enough water
Movement: Not usually the main cause, but our bodies need activity
Genetics / gut health: Some kids are just more prone—whether from family history, early antibiotics, prematurity, etc. This isn’t always a quick fix
💡 How I explain chronic constipation:Think of it like pregnancy. The colon stretches over time from holding large, firm stools. Once things clear out, it doesn’t just snap back overnight—it can take months to a year to return to normal function and shape.
🛠️ TreatmentOften includes a long-term plan—frequently with things like Miralax and scheduled cleanouts. Miralax works by pulling water into the colon to keep things soft, smooth, and moving.
🚨 Bottom line:Don’t wait until your child is having accidents to bring it up.
Everyone p**ps. We should be talking about it
