How it started vs. how it's going!

At just 6 months old, Storm received a pediatric stroller from FODAC at one of our clinics, which allowed him to sit up on his own for the first time.

Now, at 3 years old, he's moving on his own for the first time with his new wheelchair! His mom, Tyana, brought him back to us after struggling to get the equipment he needed elsewhere. She told our on-staff OT Bryan, "I don't know what I would do if FODAC didn't exist. He needs this wheelchair so he can start school next month."

On Sunday, August 24th, our CEO, Chris Brand, participated in a community event in Atlanta that highlighted the work of Dr. Kanubhai, and he hand-delivered a lightweight power chair to Dr.Kanubhai to aid him in his travels.

Dr. Kanubhai is the President of the Disabled Welfare Trust of India and is on a tour in the US visiting organizations that help those with disabilities. Atlanta was his 1st stop on the tour.

While he was in Atlanta, he came and toured our Facility and invited Chris to attend the welcome ceremony they held. Chris says that "Dr.Kamubhai was in a manual wheelchair that someone had to push for him to get around, and it was really amazing to see him moving himself around with the crowd in his new chair."

Dr. Kanubhai has expressed interest in building a senior facility for those with disabilities and tapping into FODAC's resources to help with supplying general mobility aids, as well as getting equipment for the children in the programs he is currently managing.

This cutie recently visited FODAC to pick up a wheelchair to start preschool! Bentlee is 4 and has Multicentric Carpotarsal Osteolysis Syndrome. This rare genetic disorder causes deterioration of the wrist and ankle bones, leading to painful joints, stiffness, and difficulty walking. His mom told us that before coming to FODAC, she had to carry Bentlee from room to room, or he would use floor-to-foot toys to get around their home. The wheelchair he received from us is his first ever!

While the chair was initially meant for school, Sunshine is thrilled about the newfound freedom it will provide. She's excited that Bentlee will now be able to go outside and play with his siblings and move around more freely both at home and in public spaces.

Last month, our President and CEO, Chris Brand, was presented with the Trailblazer award for our national disaster relief efforts, given by JABY INC.

He is pictured at the event with former DeKalb Commissioner Larry Johnson and WSB-TV personality Veronica Waters. Mr. Johnson, who presented the award, said that his first encounter with FODAC was at the DeKalb Service Center, which was set up for Hurricane Katrina survivors living in the Atlanta area.

Since FODAC’s first response to Hurricane Katrina in 2004, FODAC has provided medical items and supplies to 23 states and 4 territories.
