The Truth About Hexane – You're probably eating it and didn't know.
Hexane in food is a solvent used to extract oil from plants, seeds, and vegetables like soybeans, canola, and corn. It is a byproduct of gasoline refining and is not listed on ingredient labels because it is considered a "processing aid". While highly efficient at extracting oil, hexane is a neurotoxin that can have harmful health effects with high or prolonged exposure.
What hexane is and how it's used
Source: Hexane is a chemical derived from crude oil refining.
Function: It acts as a solvent to efficiently separate oil from protein in oilseeds and vegetables.
Processing: The oilseeds are bathed in hexane, which then evaporates, leaving the oil and protein behind. The hexane is largely removed and captured, but some residual amounts can remain in the final product.
Products: It is used in the production of a wide variety of processed foods, including vegetable oils and protein ingredients found in items like some meat alternatives and nutrition bars.
Health and safety concerns
Neurotoxin: Hexane, particularly the n-hexane isomer, is a neurotoxin that can be harmful to humans.
Health effects: Short-term exposure can cause symptoms like headaches, dizziness, and nausea. Prolonged and high exposure is linked to long-lasting damage to the nervous system, including peripheral neuropathy (numbness and tingling).
Regulations: The European Union has set limits for hexane residues in food, while the U.S. FDA does not currently have a maximum residue level or require testing for food products.
Labeling: Because it's a processing aid, hexane is not required to be listed on food labels, so its presence is not known to consumers.
How to avoid it
Certified organic: Certified organic products are prohibited from using synthetic inputs like hexane.
Choose alternatives: Opt for oils that are not processed with hexane, such as extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil, or coconut oil, especially for cooking. Some companies also offer products with hexane-free soy ingredients.
The most important step for getting hexane out of the body is to immediately stop any further exposure. Once exposure ceases, the body will naturally process and eliminate the chemical over time.
The Body's Natural Process
Exhalation: A small portion of absorbed n-hexane (10-20%) is naturally excreted unchanged through the lungs.
Metabolism: The majority of n-hexane is metabolized in the liver by enzymes into a neurotoxic compound called 2,5-hexanedione (2,5-HD) and other metabolites.
Urinary Excretion: The metabolites, primarily 2,5-HD, are water-soluble and are slowly eliminated from the body in the urine over a few days.
Supporting Natural Elimination
While the body has its own systems for processing toxins, you can support general detoxification pathways through healthy lifestyle practices:
Hydration: Drink plenty of fresh, pure water to help flush out the metabolites through the kidneys.
Physical Activity: Regular, moderate-to-intense exercise increases circulation and respiration, and promotes sweating, which aids in the elimination of toxins.
Sweating Therapies: Using a sauna or steam room can also encourage perspiration, another route for toxin release.
Healthy Diet: A diet focused on whole, organic foods, including cruciferous vegetables, garlic, and onions, provides essential nutrients to support the liver's detoxification processes. Avoiding ultra-processed foods can reduce your overall toxic load.
Adequate Sleep: Ensuring sufficient quality sleep is crucial, as the body repairs and regenerates and removes toxins during this time.
Important Considerations
Cessation of Exposure: Recovery from hexane exposure and potential neuropathy is contingent on halting any ongoing exposure to the chemical.
Medical Advice: If you believe you have experienced significant hexane exposure or are experiencing symptoms such as headache, nausea, or muscle weakness, you should seek immediate medical attention. There is no specific "natural" treatment for n-hexane neuropathy other than removing the source of exposure and managing symptoms under medical supervision.
