Q***ring Disability is coming back, y'all!

I'm SO EXCITED to be partnering with Crip Care: A Radical Disability Justice Project and Stonington Pride to bring life back to this amazing group.
We're going to be building a truly intersectional, grassroots community of advocates and activists, rooted in the principles of disability justice, who want to learn about policy and legislation here in Connecticut, and who want to get involved in making change for our communities.

Our first meeting, which will be a primer, a "what we're doing, a bit of the basics, and what do YOU want from this?" kind of a thing, will be on Thursday, January 8, 6:30p.

Every week I try to call my legislators about something that matters to me.

This week I called about the dismantling of federal education programs and workforce. I expressed my outrage that this was happening, and asked my federal legislators to:
🎓 forcefully push back against the proposal to reclassify certain professional degrees and limit student loans to receive them, and
🎓 conduct oversight into the administration's unconstitutional dismantling of a federal agency without ANY congressional action or approval. WTF?!

I encourage you all to call your senators and congressmen as well. If it seems daunting, I recommend the free app 5 Calls. It gives you the numbers to call, and a sample script to work from.

Today I am feeling even more thankful than usual.

Thankful for all the love I am surrounded by.
For the trust my community puts in me.
For my mobility aids, access features, remote meetings.
For leaders who stand by their principles and values.
For the ways our community pulls together to care for each other.
For the fact that I get to spend my life doing the work I do.
I am thankful for you all.

What are you thankful for today?

Thanks to Devyn for sharing from this one (resulting in my purchase) at our Trans Day of Remembrance poetry open mic & vigil. 🖤🏳️‍⚧️

Every week I try and call my reps about something that matters to me.

This week I called my federal legislators to ask them to support legislation to repeal the provision in the recent spending bill that allows senators to sue the government for investigating their phone records.

It was a bananas choice to give a handful of senators a privilege that other American's don't have, all to allow 8 republican senators who are alleged to be associated with January 6th to sue retroactively for their phone records being seized in Jack Smith's investigation of Trump's 2020 election interference.

How do we know it's to benefit these (alleged) insurrectionists? Because the provision ONLY benefits senators. Not members of the House, and certainly not you or me.

I encourage you to call your legislators as well! If it feels daunting, the free app 5 Calls is very helpful.

Transgender Day of Remembrance is coming up, and there are TWO (actually 3) wonderful events I want to share with you.

On Thursday the 20th at 6pm, join yours truly and outCT at All Souls Unitarian Universalist Congregation New London for a candlelight vigil to honor our Trans siblings who have been taken too soon.

On Saturday the 22nd, Stonington Pride and Bank Square Books are teaming up to provide two events:
12pm - Trans Voices Storytime for kids and young adults. Trans history books, read theatrically by one of our all-time favourite volunteers (iykyk)!

6pm - Our annual vigil and open mic for all ages - Come and share from the heart and hold space for those who we have lost, and build community and power for the future moving forward.

I am so incredibly honored to have been appointed as an alternate to the Stonington K-12 Building Committee. To get to attend and weigh in on the future (and accessibility) of our schools is a huge privilege! To get to learn from my fellow committee members and the experts we will consult will be such an incredible opportunity that I am deeply grateful for. I'm very excited to work together to put together a plan for our schools infrastructure that will balance serving the needs of our kids and educators, being accessible and inclusive, and being fiscally responsible. It's a big task, but I'm ready for it!

As an alternate, I will be able to attend all meetings, and I believe participate in everything except to vote. If one of the 7 regular members is not in attendance, I will be able to step in and fill their seat, keep quorum, and take the seat as a voting member for the duration of their absence. Only 2 alternates were appointed, so I take my role very seriously, and am honored at the trust the town has placed in me.

Join Stonington Pride this Saturday at The Ditty Bag Market and Cafe for an afternoon of self-care and community connection and support.

This week we are making cards for trans folks via Point of Pride. You only have to bring yourself, we'll provide everything else! But you are more than welcome to bring markers, stickers, or whatever other supplies you'd like. They're always welcome!

This is open to q***r folk and those who love them (that is to say, everyone is welcome).

The Ditty Bag is wheelchair accessible, LGBTQ+ friendly, and has various seating options available. If you have any further questions, please let us at Stonington Pride know.
