Today’s takes you outside on a Fall scavenger hunt.

Encourage your child to pause and describe what they see. For more language practice, add “wh” questions (“What? Where? Why?”). This makes practicing speech fun, natural, and seasonal!

What is Low Tech AAC?

Low Tech AAC refers to non-electronic or very simple electronic methods and tools that help people communicate when they have difficulty with speech, such as communication boards, picture symbol books like PECS, or sign language. These systems provide an alternative means of expression, are often affordable and easy to create, and are beneficial for various communication needs, especially in situations where high-tech devices are not feasible. There are some limitations to Light-Tech AAC such as a restricted number of symbols or words available and unlike high-tech devices, these systems do not provide a voice output.

What is High-Tech AAC?

High-tech AAC uses electronic devices like tablets (e.g., iPad), computers with communication software, or dedicated Speech-Generating Devices (SGDs). Users interact with the device by selecting symbols, words, or phrases on a screen and the device converts these selections into spoken words or phrases through a voice output. High-tech AAC provides a voice for those who cannot verbalize, enabling functional communication, expression of feelings, and social participation.

What is the Cycles Approach?

The Cycles Approach is a speech therapy method for children with speech sound disorders, particularly those who are highly unintelligible and exhibit multiple articulation errors. It improves overall intelligibility by targeting specific patterns in “cycles,” rather than fixing every error at once. Therapy focuses on one or two patterns for a few weeks, then shifts to new ones. Earlier patterns are revisited and reinforced in later cycles.

What is a Rotary Chew Pattern?

A rotary chew pattern is a circular, grinding motion of the jaw used to break down food into smaller pieces for swallowing and is an important developmental milestone for children. A rotary pattern signals advanced oral motor control, enabling children to safely transition to more textured foods beyond purees. This pattern is crucial for children to develop the ability to eat a wider variety of textures, especially fibrous foods like meats and certain fruits, and helps prevent choking and digestive issues. As children progress, they develop diagonal jaw movements, an initial stage of rotary chewing, between 6-9 months. The full rotary pattern, a circular jaw motion, begins to emerge around 6-10 months and is typically refined by age 36 months.
