🌿 Choosing the Right Midwife for You

Choosing a midwife is one of the most personal and empowering decisions you’ll make in your pregnancy journey. At Linden Tree Midwifery, we believe that finding the right fit goes beyond credentials — it’s about trust, connection, and shared values.

We’re so fortunate to have so many wonderful midwives in our area — each with her own strengths, wisdom, and unique approach to care. Whether you’re planning a home birth, birth center birth, or simply seeking compassionate prenatal support, there’s someone whose philosophy and energy will align beautifully with yours.

Here are a few things to consider as you explore your options:

✨ 1. Listen to your intuition.
Your midwife will walk beside you through some of the most intimate moments of your life. You should feel safe, heard, and respected in her presence. If you feel comfortable opening up and asking questions — that’s a great sign.

🌸 2. Learn about her philosophy of care.
Every midwife brings her own approach to pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care. Ask how she supports informed choice, what her stance is on interventions, and how she envisions birth as a whole-person experience.

💬 3. Ask about experience and services.
From home births to birth center or hospital collaborations, it’s important to know what options your midwife provides and what kind of births she typically attends. Experience, certifications, and continued education all matter — but so does her heart for the families she serves.

🌿 4. Look for partnership, not authority.
Midwifery care is centered on collaboration. You deserve a provider who sees you as the expert of your own body and baby — someone who will guide, support, and empower you every step of the way.

🤍 5. Take your time.
Meet with more than one midwife if you need to. This is your journey, your body, and your birth. The right midwife for you is the one who helps you feel strong, informed, and at peace.

At Linden Tree Midwifery, we’re honored to be part of a community filled with skilled, compassionate midwives — and even more honored when families choose to walk this path with us.

🌿 Your birth, your way — we’re here to support you.

It is a time to raise awareness about the challenges faced by families who have experienced the loss of a pregnancy or infant, to provide support, and to honor the memories of those babies. đź’—

At Linden Tree Midwifery, we hold space for every family whose journey has included loss. Each baby—no matter how brief their time with us—leaves a lasting mark on the hearts that loved them. You are not alone in your grief, and your baby’s memory matters.

🌿 The Science & Power of Music in Birth 🌿

At Linden Tree Midwifery, we believe that birth is not just a physical process — it’s a deeply sensory, emotional, and even spiritual experience. And one of the most powerful ways to shape that experience is through music.

When you listen to music you truly love, something extraordinary happens in your brain. Circuits involving the amygdala, ventral tegmental area, and nucleus accumbens light up — areas tied to emotion, reward, and connection. This triggers the release of dopamine and your body’s own natural opioids, creating feelings of pleasure, comfort, and even euphoria.

Your neurons begin to fire in rhythm with the beat, helping you find a steady flow and connection to your body. When others in the room listen with you — your partner, doula, or midwife — your brain waves can literally synchronize, deepening that sense of unity and support.

Physiologically, music helps regulate the body in labor:
đź’— It slows the heart rate
đź’¨ Deepens breathing
🌸 Lowers stress hormones
🌙 Encourages relaxation and a sense of safety

This calm, connected state supports the hormonal flow of birth — oxytocin, endorphins, and the intricate dance between mother and baby.

✨ Try This:

Choose music that makes your body feel good — not just calm, but aligned and strong.

Build a playlist that moves with labor’s stages: gentle rhythms for early labor, grounding or empowering sounds for transition.

Practice moving, swaying, or breathing with your music in pregnancy so it becomes a familiar cue for your body to soften and release.

Birth is rhythmic. Birth is embodied. Birth is music.
Let sound be part of your birth story — connecting you to your power, your baby, and the beautiful pulse of life itself. 💫

When we talk about interventions in birth, we usually think about physical interventions... epidural, pitocin, vaginal exams, breaking your water, etc.

But there are other interventions that can be used for good or bad, that can make your birth easier or harder.

It is important to interview providers with both the physical and mental interventions in mind. One of our midwives said "even our voices can be an intervention." This got me thinking of other sneaky interventions. Here are some examples.

A mother is laboring quietly, she is very focused, she is in labor land. Her body is doing the work. A provider comes in and starts talking loudly and asking lots of questions. Momma loses her focus and has a hard time getting it back.

A mother shares with her provider that she would like to birth her placenta naturally. Her provider starts telling stories about the horrendous hemorrhages they have seen. This instills fear, which affects her hormones, making hemorrhage more likely.

A mother is moaning normally during a contraction. She looks up and her provider has a disgusted face. She now assumes she is doing something wrong, or something is going wrong. Again instilling fear and embarrassment that make complications more likely.

Your provider has "anxious energy," heavy breathing, increased heart rate, fear of complications. Even if mom can't tell outwardly our bodies pick up on this anxiety. A calm presence helps keep a laboring woman calm. This helps support beneficial hormones and decreases complications.

All of these things can be done by providers that appear supportive, while making your birth harder. These are just a couple examples. There are so many ways these non physical interventions can affect your birth for positive or negative.

Do you have any examples of interventions like this in your births? How did it affect your thoughts and feelings?

🌿 Why Choose Out-of-Hospital Birth? The Desire for a Physiological Birth 🌿

At Linden Tree Midwifery, we often meet women who feel deeply called to birth out of hospital—not just for comfort or familiarity, but because they desire something more: a truly physiological birth.

✨ What is physiological birth?
It’s birth as nature intended—uninterrupted, undisturbed, and guided by the innate wisdom of the body. It honors the body's natural rhythms, the hormonal orchestration of labor, and the unique unfolding of each baby's journey earthside.

🏡 Why out of hospital?
For many, being out of the hospital provides the safety, privacy, and peace needed for the body to do what it was designed to do. Without the bright lights, strict timelines, and frequent interventions often found in clinical settings, the body can labor more freely, intuitively, and gently.

đź’¬ Our clients often say:

“I chose out-of-hospital birth because I trusted my body. I wanted to be seen, heard, and supported—not managed.”

Midwifery-led out-of-hospital birth offers skilled care and deep respect for this physiological process. We are there to support, to witness, and to step in only when truly needed—never to interfere without cause.

If you're drawn to the idea of birth as a sacred, natural event—and you want to explore whether out-of-hospital birth is right for you—we’re here to walk that path with you.

🌿 Trust your body. Trust your birth.

Out of hospital birth care is all about holistic health. We strive to support wellness in your body physically and emotionally.

A large part of supporting health is using supplements when needed. Prenatal vitamins with folate, magnesium, iron, and essential fatty acids are some of the most common supplements we see being used. There are so many options and it can be confusing.

Always let your midwife know what supplements you are taking. They can give suggestions as well to help support health.

What supplements did you take while pregnant? What did you find the most helpful?

We haven't had any babies this weekend... yet. But our very own has spent the weekend helping to birth a new generation of midwives.

Helping train midwives is her passion. Having enough well trained, certified midwives makes birth safer for all families choosing out of hospital care.

We couldn't be more proud of Kim and the work she is doing. She is a wonderful midwife and teacher.

Out of hospital birth is about family centered care. And for many of us, our pets are an important part of the family.

Many people ask us questions about dogs dealing with labor and new babies. In our experience, dogs are very aware and sensitive to labor and birth.

Many dogs can instinctively tell when a momma is about to be in labor. Over and over, we hear stories of dogs being more protective and staying very close to mom right before labor starts. Then, after birth, accepting the baby as part of the family and wanting to protect the new member.

Did you have experiences like this with your dogs or cats before or after birth? Let us know in the comments.

The Science of Holding Hands During Labor 🤝✨

It might seem simple, but holding a loved one’s hand during labor has real, measurable benefits. 💚

🌟 Research shows that just touching someone you love can reduce pain, lower stress levels, and even sync your heartbeats and brainwaves. It’s called interpersonal synchronization—your bodies literally connect in support.

🤲 Holding hands releases oxytocin, the "love hormone," which helps ease anxiety and promote bonding. In labor, this kind of support isn’t just emotional—it’s physiological.

At Linden Tree Midwifery, we believe in the power of connection, and we’ve seen firsthand how something as small as a hand to hold can create calm in the midst of intensity.

🕊️ Whether it’s a partner, a doula, a midwife, or a trusted friend—loving touch matters.
