Changing Ways Counseling, LLC I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker providing mental health, trauma therapy & when appropriate addiction treatment.

Changing Ways Counseling, LLC is a private practice that was established in November 2020 by the owner and founder Brooke Vargas, LCSW. I am trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) to treat trauma/adverse life experiences and numerous other mental health diagnoses. I have worked in various capacities with numerous populations, such as a residential counselor & job coach for those with developmental disabilities, a victim’s advocate for survivors of domestic violence & sexual assault, a group facilitator for those involved in the criminal justice system who committed domestic violence offenses & as a clinician for those afflicted with severe & persistent mental illness & addiction. I’ve provided outpatient, intensive outpatient program services & assessment & diagnosis.

from Dr. Francine Shapiro,

"The experiences we encountered became encoded in our memory networks and are the basis of how we perceive the world as adults. And even the most supportive families can still leave children with unprocessed memories."

Your inner critic can be LOUD, but you don’t have to listen to it. Try asking yourself these questions instead!

I created the Foundations of Self-Love to describe what most helped me because there was no one thing that made me love myself (maybe your journey is different).

It’s also important to acknowledge that some of us start at different places.

Mental illness changes the self-love journey. Physical illnesses and disabilities change the self-love journey. Child abuse and trauma change the journey. Lack of resources, support, and community change the journey.

Self-love doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It’s not Point A to Point B. It is such a personal experience. I can’t tell you how to love yourself. No random person on the internet can. I can give you the tools I use. I can point you in the right direction (we’re all trying to get to the same place right?) but I don’t have the magic formula - this is about as close as I can get.
