Last October I lost my equine partner of 16 years. He was wonderfully aged to 28, so I know he loved a full life, but it was still terribly difficult. Making an oath to care for another living being is a BIG deal and mostly filled with joy. But the end is hard, yet part of our promise to them. To know when to make that choice for them…to honor their quality of life and hear their need for you to do what’s right by them even if it breaks your heart.
My dear life long friend surprised me with this painting for my Birthday. I instantly cried when I opened it. There is something so special about someone so lovingly creating something for you. Didn’t she captured him so well!? This was from a picture that was taken the day I said goodbye to him. I will treasure it and feel so lucky to have it displayed in my home.
My horse partner was more than just an animal or hobby to me, he was therapy…a big part of my identity and sense of self. He allowed many adventures, relationships and experiences to come into my life. He brought self growth, comfort, joy. He brought me back into myself more times than I can remember and out of the chaos of the rest of the world. Our animal guides can offer us so much more than we typically think of. Do you have an animal companion in life? Have you had to say goodbye to any?
