In March of 1941, four members of Baltimore’s first Alcoholics Anonymous chapter signed a lease on a run-down building at 857 N. Eutaw Street. A couple of the guys were painters and carpenters, and put their skills to work fixing up the place, which they named the “857 Club.” And there they stayed until 1987, growing in numbers year after year.
Today, the 857 Club operates out of 100 S. Haven Street in Highlandtown. From the outside, it’s a red door and a plain sign and a lot of Formstone. But inside, their mission remains the same as it was in 1941. To help whomever walks through that red door turn their life around.
