For those eager to get out in the woods and do some hiking and camping please be aware that there are a lot of ticks this year. But don’t let that discourage you from enjoying the outdoors! Here are a few simple tips to follow to reduce your exposure and what to do if you find yourself bitten by a tick.

🧦Tuck your pant legs into your socks, wear long-sleeved shirts, and apply insect repellent before hitting the trails. It’s a good idea to wear light-colored clothing to make it easier to spot ticks.

🥾Stay on the trail! Avoid tall grass and dense undergrowth. Check yourself periodically for ticks as you hike. The more often you check, the better chance of finding them before they attach!

🐶When you are done with your hike be sure to check yourself (and your pets!) for ticks. Shower and launder your clothes as soon as possible.

👕You can also treat your clothes, hiking, and camping gear with products containing permethrin or picaridin. Be sure to follow the application instructions for whichever product you choose!

If you find a tick attached to you:

🔹Use fine-needled tweezers to grip the tick as close to the skin as possible. Pull steadily up and away from the skin until tick is removed. Place the tick in a container or bag of rubbing alcohol to kill it. Wash the bite with warm water and soap or rubbing alcohol. Dispose of the dead tick in the trash.

🔹Keep an eye on the bite area for several days. If you have any concerns about a tick bite, especially if a rash or fever develops, contact your doctor.

Tick facts:

Ticks usually climb upwards, seeking areas on the host with thin skin such as the backs of the knees, groin, armpits, and scalp.

Ticks can transmit diseases like Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.

Ticks are most active in the spring, but are found year-round, even in the winter! If it’s above freezing, ticks are out!

You don’t always feel a tick bite because they secrete an anesthetic (a pain reliever) to keep from being noticed by the host. They also release an anticoagulant (a substance that stops the blood from clotting).

Ticks do serve a function in the ecosystem! They act as a food source for various animals, including reptiles, amphibians, birds, and some mammals. They also help regulate wildlife populations by acting as a selective pressure, potentially reducing the spread of weaker or disease-carrying animals.
