It’s hard not to get caught up in the unknown of the COVID-19. Panic, without purpose and without a plan, will only lead to further chaos and fear. I’m sure you’ve read all of the tips for keeping your physical health under control, such as washing your hands, eating nutritious foods, avoiding large crowds, and covering your mouth when you sneeze.
Here are some tips for getting your anxiety and fear under control:
1. Square Breathing 🔲🗣- Find a wall or other square object to focus on. Inhale for 4 counts as you trace the left side of the square with your eyes, hold for 4 counts as you trace the top, exhale for 4 counts as you trace the right side of the square heading down, and hold for 4 counts as you trace the bottom. Continue doing this until you feel your breath slowing down. You control your breath; it dos not control you.
2. Journal 📖 🖊- Write out your fears and face them. Ask yourself questions like, “Am I being rational?” and “What is the worst case scenario? Then what?”
3. Get moving! 🏃♀️🏋️♀️🚴🏻♀️- Exercise, go for a walk, take a bike ride. Endorphins are released with exercise and decrease stress hormones.
4. Distractions 🐕 🎹🎨🎸🎬- Remind yourself of things that bring you joy, and make it a point to do them. Maybe it’s playing with a pet, reading, crafts, cooking, listening to music, or watching your favorite show. Get back to things that make you smile 😃.
5. Know your limits 🛑🤚- If anxiety, fear, and stress are too much to handle, and it’s becoming a debilitating problem for you, seek out a professional. Find a caring therapist who can validate, reassure, and help you make sense of the chaos.
