This important insight into how couples get stuck in repetitive arguments is useful only if practiced over and over again like any skill. Despite this wisdom, some couples keep complaining, attacking and criticizing each other. It seems it is easier to blame your partner than to sit with difficult emotions like hurt, despair, hopelessness, feeling ignored, and rage. Taking a few breaths and waiting instead of reacting can prevent escalation and blow ups. Being able to self-regulate is a skill.

Stonewalling occurs when the listener withdraws from the interaction, shutting down and closing themselves off from the speaker because they are feeling overwhelmed or physiologically flooded. Rather than confronting the issue, someone who is stonewalling will be totally unresponsive.
