At Thurston Woods Village, we have an up-to-date, beautifully maintained facility. The lovely lawns and gardens are well-kept, with areas of park-like quality, reflecting a worthy heritage and reputation. Our community offers an active lifestyle, gracious living, friendships, healthy activities, and security. The history of this beautiful facility began with Alta Schrock, who envisioned a nursing home to be created in an empty building that was owned by Clifford and Alfred Froh. The suggestion was put into the hearts of the Mennonite Board of Missions in Iowa. Many volunteers worked on the building and grounds as extensive remodeling was needed to bring the building up to state code. Finally, in 1953, the old Froh Homestead opened its doors as a nursing home accommodating 35 “guests,” with housing room for eight to ten workers. In addition, 460 acres of farmland were rented and worked by volunteer service workers. Eventually, the need outgrew the facility, and in 1968, the home was moved from the U.S. 12 building into Sturgis. Licensed as Froh Community Home, there was room for 66 residents. In 1976, expansion was completed to allow space for 118 residents. In 1985, Thurston Woods Village incorporated and became a retirement community. A 90-unit home for the aged was added, along with a 33-unit, rent-subsidized apartment complex. In response to the need for independent housing with services, the Village Homes duplexes and Gables apartments project started in 2000 and today consists of 6 apartment buildings (36 apartments) and 15 duplex buildings (30 homes), with room for expansion. The most recent improvements and additional services are the complete renovation of Froh Community Home and a new short-stay rehabilitation wing. Today, Thurston Woods Village serves 300 residents at various levels of care, employs 200 plus individuals, and maintains over 25 buildings on more than 100 acres of land. Thurston Woods Village’s unique multi-level living options make it stand out from the crowd. The four different living options are:

• Independent living housing. The Village Homes duplexes and The Gables apartments are set in a quiet, safe neighborhood and offer several financial options, floor plans and services.

• Assisted living at “The Villa” includes 24-hour staffing assistance, three meals a day, medication assistance, housekeeping and laundry service.

• A leader in quality care, Froh Community Home and Rehabilitation is a Five Star skilled care community and has been awarded “One of America’s Top Nursing Homes” for eight consecutive years. The dedicated and skilled clinicians and staff assure your stay with us maximizes your well being and care. Residents enjoy the outstanding activity programs, specialized therapy and restorative service, buffet dining which includes the ability to order meals from menus, and the well known homelike environment. Each semi-private room is equipped with television and a free Wi-Fi service.

• The Short Stay Rehabilitation Department is staffed with highly trained clinicians who are available seven days a week. We pride ourselves with excellent outcomes, resident satisfaction reports, and low average length of stay. Working with the resident and their significant others, the team immediately upon admission formulates discharge plans and goals. A home assessment and a final discharge meeting assure a safe return home with appropriate services.

• HUD housing, known as “The Manor,” must meet HUD income and age guidelines, with rent being based upon income. Thurston Woods Village was founded upon the principal of service and continues this tradition today as a not-for-profit retirement community, associated with Mennonite Health Services. We are also an active member of the community, belonging to several service groups and supporting community events. 🎉 Part 3 of 3: Homecoming Dance 2025 🎉

Our residents had a blast at the final event of our Homecoming celebration! They enjoyed delicious cupcakes and punch, creative face painting and temporary tattoos courtesy of Imagination Station, and slappin' tunes from our talented friend, Sweet Jonny Knox

👑 Congratulations to our Homecoming King and Queen, David & Nancy! They were voted in by their peers—and it was very well-deserved!

💃🕺 Huge thanks to the amazing teens from Sturgis Key Club who stayed to dance and connect with our residents. You brought so much joy and energy to the evening!

We also want to recognize the kind-hearted volunteers who handcrafted cozy pillows for our resident raffle. Your thoughtful gifts were a hit and deeply appreciated!

And of course, thank you to our generous Corporate Platinum Sponsor, Sturgis Bank for your continued support in making these joyful events possible. We’re so grateful!

🎉 Homecoming Dance Prep: A Look Behind the Scenes! 🕺💃
Yesterday was our Annual Thurston Woods Village Homecoming Dance, and the celebration was unforgettable! But before the music started and the dancing began, we had an incredible team helping us get everything ready.

A huge shoutout to the amazing Sturgis Key Club for showing up in full force to help decorate the dining room, prep raffle tickets for our handmade pillow giveaway (crafted by our talented volunteers!), and organize ballots for our Homecoming King and Queen.

Stay tuned—more highlights from a visit from the Colon Community School District cheerleaders and the dance coming soon!

Look who stopped by our booth! Doyle was the maintenance supervisor at Thurston Woods for many years— now retired. He even manned the booth for a few minutes so staff could get an elephant ear. 🥰

Village Homes & Gables residents have been very busy!

They enjoyed a lovely flower arranging session, playing co****le, and our newest activity, Whine, Wine & Puzzles, was a big hit with everyone.

Great laughs, good wine, and even better company!

🌾 Did you know? When the Froh Brothers Homestead opened its doors in 1953—right there in that large brick building on US-12—it was a working farm! 🧺🌽

Residents weren’t just living there—they were part of the rhythm of farm life. They helped snap beans, shuck corn, can fresh produce, and even set the table for mealtime. It was a place where everyone pitched in (as they were able) and found joy in the simple, meaningful tasks of daily living.

Fast forward to today, and that spirit of community is still alive and well! 🧡

This week, residents had a great time shucking sweet corn from Byler's Farm Market for Chef Austin—corn was on the menu, and the energy was contagious! To stay on theme, they accessorized with bandanas and cowboy hats. 🤠😄

💬 What do you think—does having the opportunity to help out bring people joy and a sense of purpose?

📸 Included are three vintage photos from around 1953.
