At Thurston Woods Village, we have an up-to-date, beautifully maintained facility. The lovely lawns and gardens are well-kept, with areas of park-like quality, reflecting a worthy heritage and reputation. Our community offers an active lifestyle, gracious living, friendships, healthy activities, and security. The history of this beautiful facility began with Alta Schrock, who envisioned a nursing home to be created in an empty building that was owned by Clifford and Alfred Froh. The suggestion was put into the hearts of the Mennonite Board of Missions in Iowa. Many volunteers worked on the building and grounds as extensive remodeling was needed to bring the building up to state code. Finally, in 1953, the old Froh Homestead opened its doors as a nursing home accommodating 35 “guests,” with housing room for eight to ten workers. In addition, 460 acres of farmland were rented and worked by volunteer service workers. Eventually, the need outgrew the facility, and in 1968, the home was moved from the U.S. 12 building into Sturgis. Licensed as Froh Community Home, there was room for 66 residents. In 1976, expansion was completed to allow space for 118 residents. In 1985, Thurston Woods Village incorporated and became a retirement community. A 90-unit home for the aged was added, along with a 33-unit, rent-subsidized apartment complex. In response to the need for independent housing with services, the Village Homes duplexes and Gables apartments project started in 2000 and today consists of 6 apartment buildings (36 apartments) and 15 duplex buildings (30 homes), with room for expansion. The most recent improvements and additional services are the complete renovation of Froh Community Home and a new short-stay rehabilitation wing. Today, Thurston Woods Village serves 300 residents at various levels of care, employs 200 plus individuals, and maintains over 25 buildings on more than 100 acres of land. Thurston Woods Village’s unique multi-level living options make it stand out from the crowd. The four different living options are:
• Independent living housing. The Village Homes duplexes and The Gables apartments are set in a quiet, safe neighborhood and offer several financial options, floor plans and services.
• Assisted living at “The Villa” includes 24-hour staffing assistance, three meals a day, medication assistance, housekeeping and laundry service.
• A leader in quality care, Froh Community Home and Rehabilitation is a Five Star skilled care community and has been awarded “One of America’s Top Nursing Homes” for eight consecutive years. The dedicated and skilled clinicians and staff assure your stay with us maximizes your well being and care. Residents enjoy the outstanding activity programs, specialized therapy and restorative service, buffet dining which includes the ability to order meals from menus, and the well known homelike environment. Each semi-private room is equipped with television and a free Wi-Fi service.
• The Short Stay Rehabilitation Department is staffed with highly trained clinicians who are available seven days a week. We pride ourselves with excellent outcomes, resident satisfaction reports, and low average length of stay. Working with the resident and their significant others, the team immediately upon admission formulates discharge plans and goals. A home assessment and a final discharge meeting assure a safe return home with appropriate services.
• HUD housing, known as “The Manor,” must meet HUD income and age guidelines, with rent being based upon income. Thurston Woods Village was founded upon the principal of service and continues this tradition today as a not-for-profit retirement community, associated with Mennonite Health Services. We are also an active member of the community, belonging to several service groups and supporting community events.
