About
Safety Town is a miniature version to scale of the City of Sturgis with roads, sidewalks, buildings, and working stop lights and cross walk lights. Children learn proper pedestrian and bicycle safety on a realistic training ground. A major component of Safety Town is a two week summer program for students entering kindergarten. During the two week camp students will attend class for two hour

s daily including classroom instruction and practical application. Topics of study include pedestrian, bicycle, bus, internet, and personal safety. The camp utilizes police, fire, emergency communications operators, school personnel, and the electric department to provide safety lessons to the campers. Safety Town has been made possible by the generous community sponsors named under the sponsor tab.

Today was electrical day at Safety Town, as well as bus safety and graduation day. Our campers were able to meet members of the Sturgis Electric Department, and we were able to see some of the equipment and gear that the electric department workers use on a daily basis. Our campers also were able to see a lineman climb a pole, which they all thought was pretty cool. All of our campers then had the opportunity to ride in an elevator, and each camper was able to push the elevator buttons. Thank you to Sturgis Electric Department workers Todd Crites, Skyler Santori, Robert Risk, Brett Vanzant, Tyler Guzzy, Chris McArthur, Kim Prak, and Brendan Withington for helping our campers today with the electric day.

After speaking with the Sturgis Electric Department, our campers moved to the school bus. For most of our campers, this was their first-time riding on a school bus. Sturgis Public Schools bus driver, Miss Anissa, drove our campers around town today on a Sturgis Public School's bus and our kids really enjoyed it. We practiced going over railroad tracks, and we drove through the Meijer, Walmart and McDonald's parking lots. We stopped by most of the SPS schools today, and our kids were able to see some goldfish in the Eastwood School Pond. At SHS our campers had popsicles and the campers were able to run around the gym. We then finished the day with a quick graduation ceremony. Thank you to Miss Anissa for driving us around town today. Thank you to all of the parents and presenters for allowing this week’s camp to be a success. Thank you all for another great week!

Thank you!

Today was Electrical Day at Sturgis Safety Town. Unfortunately the weather was not very cooperative, so our campers were not able to see the Sturgis Electric Department's equipment today. The electric department will stop by tomorrow and speak with our campers and show them the equipment they use before we do our bus tours.

Instead our campers took park in a scavenger hunt to multiple buildings in Sturgis and learned about electrical items. First our campers went and walked around the Doyle Community Center. Thank you to Mike Liston and his staff for allowing us to visit the Doyle Center! We then went to the Sturgis Community Pool where Melanie Oconnell and Steven Crone showed our campers some of the wonderful things the Sturgis Community Pool has to offer. Thank you Melanie and Steven for your help today! Our campers then went to Congress School and played in the gym and toured the library. Thank you to Kim Flowers and Vince LaPorte for allowing us to use your building to have some fun while it was raining outside. We then went to the Sturges-Young Center for the Arts and event coordinator Jamie Eymer allowed our campers to be super stars and they all got to go on the main stage of the auditorium. Thank you Jamie for allowing our campers to visit today! After a snack, our campers were able to visit the police department. Officer Jimenez showed the campers all over the police department, and the kids asked a lot of great questions. Overall it was a great day for our campers even if the weather didn't cooperate.

Thank you to all who made this city wide scavenger hunt possible!

Today was Bike Safety day at Sturgis Safety Town. The Bike Safety Day was taught by a great man named Jim Cook for many years. In honor of Jim, Officer Jimenez and I continued to teach our campers how to bike safe and bike smart.
