🌟 Aspen Grove Resident Spotlight: Elaine Rowett
Elaine Rowett is a shining example of love, kindness, and resilience here at Aspen Grove Assisted Living. A lifelong resident of western South Dakota, Elaine now enjoys life alongside her husband, Neil, in their cozy home at Aspen Grove. Her cheerful, polite, and bright personality lights up every room she enters. Elaine’s nurturing spirit is evident in the way she cares for Neil—tidying their space, brewing coffee for them both, and ensuring his comfort with gentle attentiveness. Her compassion extends to everyone around her, always putting others first with grace and warmth. Elaine’s story reflects a life of strength and devotion; after losing her mother at a young age, she took on adult responsibilities early, learning to cook and care for her family with humor and heart. She fondly remembers her father teaching her to make pancakes and gravy—a memory that still brings a smile. Elaine’s legacy is one of love, perseverance, and joy in simple acts of care, making her a treasured member of the Aspen Grove community.

The community room was filled with color today as our residents took to the skies—on canvas, at least! Under Claudette’s expert demonstration, the group explored the geometry and movement of kites.
Highlights of the Session:
Unique Perspectives: While the prompt was a kite, the results ranged from bold, geometric abstracts to soft, whimsical scenes trailing through clouds.
The "Sip" & Social: As always, the relaxed atmosphere allowed for plenty of laughter and shared inspiration between brushstrokes.
Creative Freedom: It was wonderful to see everyone deviate from the demo to add their own "signature" flair to the tails and tassels.

The Sturgis Public Library always seems to be a great hub for the community, and hosting a quilt show is such a perfect way to showcase local craftsmanship. Quilting is practically a masterclass in geometry and color theory, isn't it?
Why those details matter
The Precision: Seeing those tiny, uniform stitches up close really makes you appreciate the hours (and likely months) of work that go into a single piece.
The Stories: Often, the patterns or fabric choices have deep personal or historical meaning to the quilters.
The Community: Events like this are a great reminder of the hidden talents our neighbors have.

The Art & Science of the Quilt
Geometric Complexity: Many traditional patterns, like the Lone Star or Log Cabin, require incredibly precise angles. If a quilter is off by even a fraction of an inch on their seam allowance, the entire design won't lay flat by the time they reach the border.
Color Theory: Quilters often use "value" (the lightness or darkness of a color) rather than just the color itself to create depth. It’s why some quilts look like they are glowing or have 3D effects.
The "Hand": In the world of high-end quilting, the "hand" refers to the feel and weight of the piece. Achieving a consistent texture across a large surface while piercing through multiple layers of fabric and batting is an athletic feat for the fingers!
Fun Fact: Historically, quilting bees were one of the few socially acceptable ways for women to gather, socialize, and discuss local politics or community news—making the library an even more fitting venue for the tradition to continue today.
It’s wonderful that the Sturgis community keeps these traditions front and center. It really turns a functional object into a piece of fine art.

The Power of the "Sing-Along"
Memory Lane: Music is one of the few things that stays vivid in our minds. A song from a wedding or a youth dance can bring back feelings and faces from decades ago.
Physical Boost: Believe it or not, singing is a bit of a workout! It helps with breathing, posture, and releases those "feel-good" endorphins.
Community Bonds: When everyone joins in on a chorus, the "volunteer" and the "resident" barrier disappears—everyone is just part of the choir.
Sturgis has such a deep well of local talent, and it’s beautiful that these women chose to spend their day "blessing" your group with their music. It’s a lovely parallel to the quilt show—both take a lot of heart, a lot of practice, and they both provide a lot of warmth.
