Children and teens happen to be more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses than adults. While enjoying time outside with your family this summer, make sure to keep an eye out for the signs of heat exhaustion. ☀️

If you notice the following symptoms, move your child inside to rest and give them a water or an electrolyte drink. If there is no improvement or your child is unable to take fluids, call us or take your child to an emergency room immediately.

To prevent heat-related illnesses before they develop, encourage your child to drink plenty of fluids during outdoor activities, wear lightweight clothing, go outside during cooler times of the day, and take regular breaks indoors or in shady areas to keep cool. Staying hydrated keeps your child's body and mind running efficiently, especially as the weather is warming up. Here’s how much water is recommended for kids to drink at each age (amounts may vary by individual).

Make drinking water fun by letting your child pick out and decorate their own water bottle or adding fruit slices to flavor water naturally. Remember to be a good role model by staying hydrated yourself as well!

Kids may need to drink more water when they are exercising or when temperatures are high. Look out for signs of dehydration such as dry lips, lightheadedness, cramps, and dark or less urine. If you have any additional questions, please reach out to us!
