It is no surprise how important relationships are in shaping the teenage brain. Maintaining and strengthening communication from childhood days and carrying it into the period of adolescence can be powerful. It will help reinforce further communication from teen to parent as they navigate the waters of adolescence.

We spend a lot of our parenting years early on using ‘helping’ and ‘fixing’ skills. When parenting teens, we need to:

🧡remember to honor the person they are becoming.

🧡allow them to feel their feelings and be in that moment with them.

🧡keep a hold of the connection we have with them above all else

🧡resist the urge to fix, but to help be their guide of decision-making through questions and discussions.

Reflective conversations will help in the activation and development of the prefrontal cortex, which plays a huge role in adolescence. Laying this groundwork, or pattern of interaction will help provide a system of relating to one another later. Meaning, if we can maintain the positive interactions we have with our adolescence–one where they freely come talk to us–we are more likely to continue having those interactions. This open pathway of communication will serve as one of the best opportunities to help guide them, when done carefully. Pause and think about them before speaking. We must remember that above all else we want to honor and nurture our relationship with them.

Another strong influence on adolescent development would be the relationship among peers. This important social connection has a lot of influence in shaping an individual's sense of self and identity. As children merge into their peers being an equal influence, a parent can still help them make good choices through open communication. While doing so can be tricky--especially to manage your own expectations for who you think your child should be. Letting go of these expectations you have for them is not easy and may prove to be one of the most difficult pieces of parenting. How we better approach our teens through their struggles will shape our relationship with our child for years to come.
