Assigning someone you trust to be your health care proxy is one of the easiest and most import steps you can take to ensure that your wishes are honored when you can't speak for yourself. You may feel that you're too young, or that it's too expensive, but you never know what tomorrow will bring. In New York, you can assign a health care proxy using a standard state form, no lawyer required. If you don't have a health care proxy in New York, the NYS Health Care Decision Act of 2010 provides a hierarchy of who will make decisions. Familiarize yourself with this law, you may need it someday.
