Did you know that Isle of Wight is roughly 82% agriculture? Our farming community is out working hard to get their crops in the ground.

As spring planting season begins, agricultural equipment is increasingly appearing on local roads, requiring caution from drivers to navigate rural areas safely.

Key Safety Tips

Slow Down Immediately: Farm machinery often travels at speeds of 25 mph or less.

Be Patient: Avoid impatience; farming is crucial work, and operators must move machinery between fields.

Watch for Turn Signals/Hand Signals: Tractors may swing wide to the right to make a left-hand turn, or they may be pulling into a field, not pulling over to let you pass.

Do Not Assume Visibility: Large equipment can block a farmer's rearward view. If you cannot see the driver's mirrors, they cannot see you.

Look for the Emblem: A slow-moving vehicle (SMV) emblem—a reflective orange triangle—indicates the vehicle is traveling under 25mph.

Pass with Extreme Caution: Only pass when it is legal and safe to do so. If you must pass, do so with caution as machinery may sway.

Stay Alert for Hazards: Machinery may have mud or debris on the road, and they may be driving partly on the shoulder.

Use Headlights: Turning on headlights helps equipment operators spot you, especially during early morning or evening hours.

Remember that farm equipment has a legal right to use public roads. Please cut them a break so everyone goes home safely.
