Our Story
To the rocky mountains and desert in Nevada and back to the lushness of the Blue Ridge and beaches found in Virginia. It appears an unlikely trajectory. However, it’s the most predictable part of Dr. Keefe’s professional journey.
Born in Norfolk, Dr. Keefe received his undergraduate degree from VCU in Richmond. While there he also met his wife, Carey, who was pursuing her Business Degree at the University of Richmond. They married and moved back to Norfolk where Dr. Keefe received his Master’s of Immunology at ODU. He received his doctorate of medicine (MD) at Eastern Virginia Medical School and pursued a residency in Otolaryngology (ENT) - Head and Neck, Facial Plastic surgery in Tampa, Florida. When a once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of a dual private and academic surgical practice model located in Las Vegas presented itself, they jumped on it. The adventure appealed to the young family and they loaded up their mini-van with their dog and two elementary-age children(and one on the way!) and headed towards the fastest growing community in the country at the time - Las Vegas.
When they arrived in 1992 the population stood at approximately 480,000. Over the next twelve years they built a thriving medical practice while the population exploded to over two million. During this time Dr. Keefe was consistently voted one of the Top 100 Docs of Vegas, voted on by fellow physicians and surgeons in the area. Despite the professional success and the wonderful experiences they had there raising their family, when their two older children went off to college in Virginia they realized the time had come to move back home. Before they could finalize their plans, however, another adventure called. This time it came in the form of an overseas experience when Dr. Keefe was asked to join an ENT group located on the North Island of New Zealand. The detour afforded the Keefe’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of living in an incredibly beautiful country and working within the public health system as an ENT surgeon in the small town of Rotorua in the center of the North Island. With a population of 60,000 it ironically bore the nickname of “Roto-Vegas” due to the adventure tourism it is known for. The Keefe’s so loved their year in New Zealand (where there are more sheep than people in the entire country) they became open to the possibility of settling in a more rural area as opposed to the bustling cities they had been attracted to in the past. With an eye on returning home to Virginia and Dr. Keefe’s year in New Zealand coming to an end another chapter beckoned. In September 2005, with the then Augusta Medical Center recruiting Otolaryngologists to the area, an opening in their Medical Office Building became available. Dr. Keefe moved in without missing a beat. It was, as they say, “meant to be.” Over the next fifteen years, Dr. Keefe was privileged to provide ENT care and Facial Cosmetic/Aesthetic Services to over 10,000 patients from that community and beyond.
Now in 2020, Dr. Keefe has returned to the Greater Hampton Roads Area, specifically to Newport News, where he and his wife moved to be closer to their children and four grandchildren. He looks forward to many years of practice in the area. He also invites patients, established or new, to take advantage of the new telemedicine opportunities. It is the next best thing to a house call.
