WTCSB felt the love at the Sweetheart Ball, hosted by the Commission on Aging at the Smithfield Center. It was a fun opportunity to engage with local seniors and have an early Valentine's Day celebration. ❀

Winter loneliness is not just a feeling. It is something you can respond to.
When days are shorter and routines shrink, it is easy for your world to get smaller. You might scroll more, cancel plans, or tell yourself it is β€œnot a big deal.” But loneliness affects mental and physical health, and it deserves attention.

Our latest blog explains why winter can intensify isolation, how to recognize when loneliness is starting to impact your mental health, and small, repeatable steps that actually help. You do not need a dramatic fix. You need steady connection.

If loneliness is tied to depression, anxiety, substance use, or thoughts of self harm, it is time to reach out.

Black mental health matters.

Su***de touches those of all ages in Black communities, with 1 in 10 youth attempting su***de and the highest rates of su***de seen in 25–34-year-old adults.

With culturally relevant mental health resources we can fight su***de in historically marginalized communities and foster a better understanding of Black mental health.

For Black History month, we are highlighting Black-owned businesses in the Western Tidewater community. Sandra owns Sugar Mama's Bake Shoppe and Ice Cream and she makes Suffolk sweeter! Stop by her shop in Suffolk for kindness and delicious treats. We recommend the banana pudding.

The su***de rate for Black youth ages 10-17 has risen over 144% over the past 15 years. This population is also more likely to struggle with depression, anxiety and other mental health challenges than youth in all other cultural backgrounds.

Read our recent blog to learn more about the root causes and triggers of this public health crisis, and the treatment disparities that magnify it.

For Black History Month, we would like to highlight Black Americans who have made important contributions to the mental health community. Dr. E. Kitch Childs paved the way for many people to be who they are, as they are.
