Few weeks ago we went back to AJ Gator's - Fairfield for Beach Trivia’s Music Bingo with Tia. She is the nicest! We had a great time and I even won, though none of the options were gluten free. Now, if only I could convince the kitchen to bake those wings.

This time I tried a Reuben without bread and coleslaw for my side. It was so yummy when I was a kid I was obsessed with Ruben sandwiches and coleslaw. My family used to tease me that I would someday write a book about where to get the best ones.

I grew up going with my grandparents, parents, then best friends in college to the Original Pancake House in Amherst, New York. Once I discovered it, I never ordered anything else except the Dutch Baby Pancake. A Dutch Baby is a pancake that cooks up along the side in a special pan. Once cooked, it is served by melting butter inside of it. Next you squeeze some lemon juice in it, sprinkle powdered sugar in it, and then cover it with strawberries. When I first was diagnosed with Celiac Disease in December of 2014, it took a long time for me to come to terms with the fact that I could no longer eat whatever I wanted. It was a mourning period. My wonderful husband knew how much I loved Dutch Baby pancakes and perfected making them so I could continue to enjoy them. When hanging with my college crew besties, he would even get up early so and make them for all of us. They always said they couldn’t tell the difference. Eleven and a half years in and I have learned that I can make almost anything gluten free with a few tweaks and a lot more effort. We use Mama Knows Gluten Free’s Dutch Baby recipe. Linked in the comments.

This past weekend for Mother’s Day, my husband made me a Dutch Baby pancake and the kids made dinner with a choice of steak or lobster. Huge thanks to Harris Teeter for the yummy steaks and lobster for our dinner meal.

If you are a mother, how were you spoiled for Mother’s Day?

Norfolk Tides games are one of our Spring and Summer staples. Our game plan is always to get there and order our gluten free pizzas 🍕 from Ynot Italian inside Harbour Park. That way there is the least possible chance of cross contamination. It’s always good and we have stayed safe. The staff is consistent and the main cook knows my concerns but listens to my requests every time.

Headed to Sojourn Fermentory last Friday night. Ordered my usual gluten-free Caprese salad. The ciders are not celiac safe but the bartender made me a gluten-free drink just for me. ❤️ the staff here is truly great and cares about making sure their customers have a wonderful experience.

𝐓𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐬!!!

Food Lion is discontinuing carrying Pasta Rummo from Italy! It’s no longer cost effective for them to carry it. 🥺 Management told me it was all of Food Lion not just our Hampton Road stores. So they should be on sale at all Food Lion stores. If it’s your favorite like mine, hit your Food Lions. I will tell you, I cleared out my Suffolk ones.

Spent the morning with a friend at the local coffee shop Colattao sipping a Cinnamon Horchata Latte while we waited for her car to complete its scheduled maintenance at First Team. For those of us with Celiac Disease there is nothing but chips there that we can eat, but I knew this going in and had already had breakfast. It was wonderful to just catch up with my friend. She loves this coffee shop and I was more than happy to caffeinate myself!

I found this great article from the journalists at Virginia Wesleyan College that I linked below if you want to learn more. It’s absolutely stunning inside and the staff was wonderful and cheerful and just happy to have you there!

Colattao Coffee House: A home away from home – The Marlin Chronicle (https://marlinchronicle.vwu.edu/2023/09/14/colattao-coffee-house-a-home-away-from-home/)

A little history about Colattao Coffee House in Virginia Beach. It is a Hispanic-owned, husband-and-wife-operated coffee house founded by Yurika Torres, who, inspired by her Dominican heritage and family history of growing coffee, aimed to create a cozy, "home away from home”. They make amazing coffee and espresso drinks many with a Hispanic touch and have amazing looking pastries which are sadly full of gluten. Definitely a fun place if you are a coffee drinker!

It was a late work day and then I went to cheer on an old patient from several years ago at her high school softball game. Cooking something extravagant was not in the cards, so it was a Pasta Rummo kinda night. I bought this Sauz sauce from Target following a coupon deal and I am in love! This is the second flavor that I have tried and I think I love this even more than the first one. I am not sure who else carries this sauce but it’s so good! This was our last package of pasta, so off to Food Lion to stock up!

So we’re trying to prepare our kids for adulthood. And we are encouraging them to make one meal a week. I found this recipe online today and that this sounded like something good and yummy that everyone would like. It was the oldest’s day to make dinner and he didn’t have a clue what to do. I had pulled out ground turkey from the freezer and told him to just Google ground turkey recipes. I didn’t want turkey burgers for dinner so I googled myself and sent him the recipe below as a possible suggestion, with my fingers crossed of course. He choose it and it was so good! Easy to make too for a teenager who has never really cooked a ton. I am sharing so others can try! Tell me what you think. We were out of garlic so ours is without it, it was still great! What did you have for dinner?

Huge thanks to Wegmans for labeling their generics gluten free! Saves us money from having to buy a lot of name brand ingredients!

Met some friends at New Realm Brewing Co. - Virginia Beach. There are a few things on the menu that are gluten free clearly marked - Corn Dip and Buffalo Chicken Wings. The corn dip is heated in a bowl in the oven and the wings can be baked to safe for Celiac. Our server notified me that they do have a gluten-free pizza crust that is not on the menu and that they cooked it on a pan and will triple wash the pan and put foil on it just to ensure there was no cross examination. I chose to go with the Margherita pizza and it was indeed wonderful. I also went with a Margarita. It was nice to have an option to be safe along side friends. The service was wonderful and I felt safe at all times. If you went before and previously had a questionable experience like we did. This is definitely worth checking out.
