Commonwealth Vascular Institute Dr. Matthew McBee is a Board-certified, Fellowship Trained Vascular Surgeon. He has been treating patients within South Hampton Roads for over 20 years.

Dr. Chad McKenzie is Board-certified in osteopathic medicine and specializes in vascular surgery. Dr. Claude M. McBee, M.D. Dr. Matthew McBee is a Board Certified, Fellowship Trained Vascular Surgeon. Dr. McBee specializes in endovascular treatment of vascular disease and thoracic-chest surgery. He has been treating patients within Southampton Roads for over 20 years. With his vascular expertise, McBee founded the Vascular Surgical Services at Obici Hospital. This continued commitment to the community enabled the Obici Hospital to build a state-of-the-art Endovascular Suite as well as an Operating Room with the latest Vascular Imaging C-Arm. Dr. McBee performed the first Endovascular Aortic Aneurysm Repair at Obici. In 1996, Dr. McBee opened his own practice, Commonwealth Vascular Institute which currently has 2 locations to better serve our community. The practice also offers in-office vascular testing in addition to the ability to perform in-office procedures in our Angio suite.

Dr. Chad McKenzie D.O. Dr. Chad McKenzie joined Commonwealth Vascular Institute January 2021. He is Board-Certified in osteopathic medicine and specializes in Vascular Surgery. He received his Bachelor’s of Science in Biology from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Ok. Dr. McKenzie holds a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Tulsa, Okla. He completed an internship and residency in General Surgery at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx, N.Y. Dr. McKenzie also completed general surgery residencies at Lincoln Hospital Trauma Center and Montefiore Medical Center. Dr. McKenzie completed a fellowship in Vascular Surgery from the Cleveland Vascular Institute in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. McKenzie is a member of several professional organizations, including the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons, New York Society of Osteopathic Physicians, American Osteopathic Association and Cleveland Vascular Society. Additionally, he is a founding member and director of Physicians for Humanity.

Brian Clay, NP-BC
Brian Clay joined Commonwealth Vascular Institute in April 2016 as a registered nurse in our office-based procedure suite. He is now a board-certified Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner. He received his Bachelor of Business Administration in 1998 from Georgia Southern University while working as an EMT with Laurens County EMS and Rural/Metro Ambulance. He returned to school and completed his RN in 2004 from Daytona Beach Community College. He started his nursing career on Long Island, NY becoming critical care trained at Stony Brook University Hospital. After spending several years as a critical care nurse and travel nurse he landed at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in their Endovascular Cath Lab. In 2022, he graduated with his Master of Science in Nursing from Stony Brook University and is board certified from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Commonwealth Vascular Institute is proud to announce we are rolling out our new EMR software starting 4/14/2025. Unfortunately, new system = learning curve so we ask if you can please be patient with us as we are going through these new and exciting changes.
NOTICE: On Monday 4/7/25 our offices will be opening at 1pm.

Our Story

Dr. Matthew McBee is a Board Certified, Fellowship Trained General, Vascular and Thoracic Surgeon. He has been treating patients within South Hampton Roads for nearly 25 years.

Dr. McBee was the first vascular surgeon to offer vascular surgical services at Obici Hospital in 1996. This continued commitment to the community enabled Obici Hospital to build a state-of-the-art Endovascular Suite as well as an Operating Room with the latest Vascular Imaging Technology. Dr. McBee performed the first Endovascular Aortic Aneurysm Repair at Obici.

He spent the first fifteen years with Commonwealth Surgical Associates, a multi-specialty surgical group. In 2011, Dr. McBee branched out on his own to open Commonwealth Vascular Institute located in the Nansemond River Medical Center in Suffolk.
