1. Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are a complex set of neurological disorders that severely impair social, communicative and cognitive functions

2. Between 30-50% of people with autism have seizures

3. Approximately 1 in 59 children is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD)

4. Boys are four times more likely to be diagnosed with autism than girls

5. Most children were still being diagnosed after age 4, though autism can be reliably diagnosed as early as age 2

5. Minority groups tend to be diagnosed later and less often

6. There is no medical detection for autism

Many young adults with autism struggle with everyday life, especially in social settings. See how a 16 week-long program teaching social skills benefited a 25-year-old feeling lonely because of his challenges making and keeping relationships. Autism Spectrum Disorder affects about 1 in 59 children and the number is increasing at an alarming rate. Those affected by ASD face a handful of obstacles such as:

* Early screening and diagnosis challenges
* Safety concerns like individuals with autism wandering away from safe environments
* Lack of programs for adults with autism
* Little to no answers about Autism Spectrum Disorder

We have come a long way but there is a long way to go to support individuals effected by Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Children with autism experience the world differently from most people. Their sensory issues can affect how they smell, hear, and see things. They may even find it impossible to eat foods of a particular color, for example. Parents often find it difficult when their child demonstrates some of these behaviors in public. Supporting parents in their journey of raising children with autism is incredibly important to supporting children with autism. If you know a parent with autism, be understanding and do what you can to love them on their journey.

Did you know that some adults today are being diagnosed with autism for the first time? Due to a lack of awareness historically when it comes to understanding, screening and diagnosing autism, people are being diagnosed in adulthood. Though more resources and programs are becoming available, we still lack the support needed to give both children and adults living with autism, as well as their parents the best quality of life.

For many kids with autism, a school can be their most challenging environment because of factors like inconsistent schedules, difficulty with social communication, and inconsistent rules and expectations. Autism is a lifelong developmental disability with difficulties such as social interactions, communication, and over- or under-sensitive to sounds, touch, tastes, smells or light. In addition, individuals also experience repetitive and restricted interests, activities and behaviors.
