When I started medical school over 20 years ago, at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine Chicago, everything was specialty-focused. So much so that I had barely even heard of family medicine. Out of nearly 200 students in my class, fewer than ten of us chose primary care.
As I trained, I saw incredibly complex medical conditions, and I kept asking the same question: How did it get this complicated? And more importantly, could some of this have been prevented?
Over time, the answer became clear. Many chronic conditions don’t appear overnight. They’re often the result of small decisions, habits, and missed opportunities compounded over years. And that’s where I felt called to be, at the front end of health, catching things early, making them better, and teaching people in ways they could carry forward and even share with their loved ones.
I also began to see how busy healthcare systems can unintentionally fragment care. Patients may see excellent specialists who focus deeply on one organ or one problem, yet still feel unsure about the bigger picture. Family medicine gave me the opportunity to step back, connect the dots, and help people understand how everything fits together.
Practicing in different healthcare settings only reinforced one truth: when people understand their health and feel supported, prevention becomes possible. Real change happens. But that kind of care takes time, patience, and attention.
That’s what I get to do at InTouch Primary Care, Sugar Land TX — and it’s been truly fulfilling and a genuine blessing to walk alongside people in their health journeys.
If you or someone you love is looking for healthcare that focuses on prevention rather than reaction, I invite you to schedule a free 15-minute consult.
