VITAMIN D AND DEMENTIA: IS THERE A POSSIBLE LINK?
There have been several studies on vitamin D deficiency and dementia for several years, but no direct connection has been found between the two until now.
A study from the University of South Australia, published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, analyzed data from 294,514 UK Biobank participants and examined the effect of vitamin D levels (low levels at 25 nmo/L and below) on dementia and stroke risk.
The findings of their study were significant:
- Low levels of vitamin D were associated with reduced brain volume and an increased risk of dementia and stroke
- Vitamin D deficiency is associated with dementia according to genetic analyses
- As much as 17% of dementia cases might be prevented if people got to a normal level of vitamin D (50 nmol/L)
- A causal relationship exists between vitamin D and dementia, but not with stroke risk
- A lower vitamin D level was associated with a lower brain volume detected using neuroimaging
