Hogan Spine & Rehabilitation is a local chiropractic and physical therapy facility that has been serving clients in the Sugar Land area since 2001. Our philosophy is to treat the cause of your pain instead of just the symptoms. Rather than drugs or invasive surgery, we treat your condition using a hands-on approach including spinal adjustments and/or soft tissue therapy. Our approach focuses on the relationship between the spine and the central nervous system as the key to complete well-being.

Even healthcare providers get injured.

During a recent marathon training cycle averaging 40-60 miles per week, Dr. Nguyen developed posterior shin splints from the increased running volume. It’s a good reminder that overuse injuries can happen to anyone, even when you understand biomechanics and injury prevention.

To manage the condition and stay consistent with training, he used a combination of:
• MLS laser therapy to help reduce inflammation and support tissue healing
• Targeted strengthening of affected muscles.
• Load management and gradual progression back into training

With the right treatment and rehab approach, Dr. Nguyen was able to continue training and recently completed:
• His 2nd full marathon at the Chevron Marathon in 3:35 (8:14 min/mile)
• The Alamo Half Marathon with a finish time of 1:37:37 (7:27 min/mile)

While MLS laser therapy can be helpful for running-related injuries like shin splints, it’s also commonly used in the clinic for a wide range of conditions - including tendonitis, ligament sprains, muscle strains, joint pain, and post-surgical recovery.

Whether you’re a runner or simply dealing with everyday aches and pains, the goal is the same for us: reduce pain, improve function, and help you get back to doing what you enjoy.

5 months ago, Dr. Nguyen began his running journey with the goal of completing his first marathon in 2025. Just a couple weeks ago, he ran the grueling 26.2 miles at the annual Woodlands Marathon, completing it with a time of 4 hours and 8 minutes! Come by and congratulate him for achieving his goal and egg him on to run an Ultra Marathon next!

If you or know of anyone that is a runner and is dealing with hip, knee or foot pain. Give us a call to book an appointment with Dr. Nguyen!

Can weather changes cause or make vertigo worse?

One of the most common causes of an abnormal spinning sensation when turning the head, or lying on the back is called Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo or BPPV. A detailed explanation explaining what this disorder is can be found here: https://vestibular.org/article/diagnosis-treatment/types-of-vestibular-disorders/benign-paroxysmal-positional-vertigo-bppv/.

I have attended approximately 3-4 patients per month since 2006 who suffer with BPPV. For the vast majority of these patients, the non-pharmaceutical hands-on therapies combined with acupuncture therapy I provide have significantly improved their symptoms in as little as one visit in most cases. For some who have suffered with long term vertigo due to BPPV, additional physical therapy is sometimes required but even those patients can often make a full recovery.

For almost 20 years I have noticed a pattern in which I see a flood of patients suffering with dizziness during both the spring and fall seasons particularly when the weather temperatures abruptly change. Just in the last week I’ve seen 5 patients with vertigo due to BPPV. Here in Texas, weather can be extreme: 80 degrees in one part of the week and 40 degrees the next. Sometimes in the same day! Every March and October I expect to see lots of people suffering with this spinning sensation when they move their head or lie on their backs. This article from 2016 describes how changes in temperature and humidity (which obviously we have an abundance of here in the Houston area) can correlate to an increase in symptoms of BPPV. Please find the article here: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1672293016000258.

If you or someone you know is suffering with a spinning sensation please feel free to call our office (281-240-2225) and schedule a consultation. The first step is a thorough history and examination to find out if you have BPPV or another cause of dizziness. In the meantime, stay warm…and cool!
