At the age of 5 years old, I got on my very first airplane to migrate from Karachi to London in search of a better life, opportunities, and education. My years in London were bitter sweet living the life of a poor immigrant where my parents worked 7 days a week living in a tiny studio apartment with bare bones used furniture and a communal toilet and bath shared with a dozen other people. I watched my parents work extraordinarily hard and in a selfless way, yet with gratitude and humble heart. Never having enough to eat, but always charitable to those who had less.
The sweet life came in the form of an extremely affordable rent controlled apartment in the most posh London neighborhood of Kensington right across from largest park (Hyde park), Kensington Palace, and the best schools.
These few years of hardship built the strongest set of character and values that proudly make me who I am today in addition to my close bond with my dear parents which will last a lifetime. 💖
Recently, the three of us returned to our old home, their jobs, my school, park, religious center,…. This was the first time that just us three returned without the rest of our family since the 1970’s!! It was such an enriching journey with grief and laughter, gratitude and blessings, tears and giggles.
I am TRULY GRATEFUL for the hard work that my parents went through. I am TRULY GRATEFUL to be blessed with these amazing humans as my dear mom and dad, I am TRULY BLESSED for the suffering and pain. I am TRULY GRATEFUL for the love and lasting core memories. For all of this, I am TRULY GRATEFUL!
